Question

Première Pro doesn't support .mov files anymore

Hi Guys,

I've recently got troubles with my Première Pro CC. I work on 2 desktop pc's, both with the latest updates installed. One pc works fine, but in the coming days I will have to finish an edit on the other pc. That worked fine until recently. Now in existing edits it says that the .mov videofiles are offline and it won't let me relink them (it says the file format is unsupported) and in new edits it won't even show .mov files when I try to import them.

When I downgraded to CC 2015.4 that worked fine again, but that's not an option for me as I have to work with an edit that has been started in CC 2017. I tried reinstalling Premiere Pro, I tried reinstalling Quicktime, I updated VLC, I even installed a K-lite Codec Pack, but none of it's working. Can someone please help me with this problem? Does anybody know why suddenly Première Pro doesn't support .mov files anymore?

My videofiles come from a Panasonic GH5 (8-bit 4K), but also older files from my Nikon D5200 won't work anymore.

My pc:

Windows 10 64-bit

Intel i7 4790

16GB RAM

GeForce GTX 750 Ti

Gigabyte GA-Z97-D3H

Thanks in advance for any help!

Kind regards,

Sander Blom

Anybody knows what is the best format to convert to ?

I tried DNX HQ but it takes twice the size of original file, still the quality is perfect.

The GH5 files ... like most DSLR-type cameras produce ... are long-GOP, and in the GH5, can be very long-GOP with more p/b frames (simple data-sets of pixels that have moved, NOT an actual frame) between complete I frames than other cameras, and some other intriguing and 'legal' if rarely used options to further compress the data to get it written to disc. Some drones are even more 'compressed' this way.

To transcode and actually keep the quality really needs to go to an intraframe like Cineform, DNxHD/R, or ProRes. Those are full intraframe formats, meaning that every frame is a complete frame, just compressed ... and often, less compressed than the very long-GOP of the camera.

So yes, file-size is a lot bigger. And if you want both image quality and smooth editing, that's what you end up with.

If you don't need the really fine image quality, don't shoot in 4k.

Physics.

From reports by other users, installing K-Lite can mess up the system so bad that the only way to get rid of it fully is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Give that a go.

This time around, do NOT install QuickTime.  It's not needed.

Clear media cache as show below:

FAQ: How to clean media cache files |Adobe Community

Rename top folder the mov are in and relink.

see how that will work.

Thanks for the reply. I just tried that, but sadly it doesn't do the job for me. :-(

Never install K-lite: can mess up your system.

Have to wait for update or go back a version.
