Question

Premiere eating up memory, doesn't work, & crashes.

My mind is blown and I can't figure out what is going on.

My computer:

2017 15" MacBook Pro

Quad Core i7

16gb of ram

AMD 560 4gb

Fully loaded MacBook pro at the time. Has worked great for almost a year with premiere.  I started a new project and imported A7iii footage and audio.  That is all I have done.  After a little, premiere pro crashed and has not stopped crashing ever since.

I open up the application and the memory usage on my mac just starts climbing; up to 100GB! And I'm not even working or doing anything. No matter what file I try to open, this happens.

I cleared the memory cache. Nothing.

I am so confused. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Did you get this resolved? Exact same thing is happening to me.

This is also happening to me. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Unsyncing fonts like one other response said to do. I can start a new project and the memory will be fine but if I do so little as create a blank sequence the memory will spike. This is my work computer and we swapped out computers thinking that was the issue but it is now happening on the new one too. S O S! It is making my work life very complicated.

can you please share your system specs and workflow? where your scratch disks are, what kind of footage are you working with?

did you check your systems for malwares? any new apps installed? which premiere pro version?

Seems like your footage are shot on the highest quality that camera can shoot at, I mean 4K and maybe V-log

where the highest data and dynamic range was captured and so, this requires from Premiere to create high

capacity preview files and cache ... you should consider having enough space for editing this kind of footage,

and probably more than one Storage Drive, a separate one for the cache and scratch disks stuff ...

Can you tell us more about your video files and your storage drives ?

New file created isnt working. Same issue.  1080p 120fps footage filmed on a standard profile.  I've owned this camera since it came out and have done some decently complex edits with the footage on this camera with my current setup.  All of my footage is on an external ssd. I have 150gb of storage available on my laptop and I've been fine when I was down to 25 gb. I'm usually pretty tech savvy but this is weird.

try to change your scratch disks location to a higher capacity drive

So I created a new project and imported the clips again. Seems to be working at the moment.  But. Does anyone know what would cause this? Premiere didn't work for 3+ hours. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
