Premiere uses all my 32GB of RAM | 2018 CC

Hi all,

I've got this weird problem. My Premiere CC 2018 is eating up all of my RAM. I'm working with a simple timeline; just 3 layers of video GH4's 4K 100Mbit Footage. (not playing simultaneously) and two audio tracks.

Whenever I jump through my timeline - for i.e. when I'm looking for a specific shot - my RAM usage skyrockets to the maximum value (32GB) which causes Premiere to drastically lag. It takes about 5 seconds to load before I can resume playback. Sometimes it even completely freezes up which makes me have to force quit the program. It's really annoying me because I've invested in a very high-end system to avoid this hassle and stress...


I've already cleared my cache.

My system:

CPU: Intel® Core™ i9-7980XE (2,6 GHz) OC'd @ 4GHz

Memory: 32 GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3600MHz (4 x 8 GB)

SSD: 500 GB Samsung 860 EVO.  -> Also the location of Premiere Pro

HDD: 2 TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3,5 inch HDD, 6 GB/s, 7200 RPM -> Where my media is located

Please help me!

I never found 32 GB adequate for Pr on my MacPro3,1.  I was constantly purging RAM using the console or a RAM purging utility when I encountered the laggy behavior you describe, which was usually anytime after editing for 15 or 20 minutes.  I thought it was normal, however disheartening.  I've since upgraded to a MacPro5,1 with 128 GB RAM and now I don't run out.

    Hi in preferences you can check how much ram you want to allow be used by Premiere Pro CC check it...Thanks

      Hi Lambioon,

      thanks for the tip. I was aware of that, however. The probolem though is that Premiere uses all of the 25GB RAM I have dedicated to the program which bottlenecks the whole system. This can’t be normaal, can it?
