Question

Premiere will open export options, but not complete the export.

I'm trying to export a 90:00 video and running into a problem I can't figure out...

The video consists of:

An audio file from Epidemic

8 MP4 files shot on DSLR

an avi file of an animated logo

a screen capture from powerpoint

a png file of a graphic

4 aep files of short animations

10 text layers with opacity keying

and 1 lumetri color adjustment layer

I highlight all of the segments, choose File>Export>Media and the export options window opens. I choose to match sequence settings, name the file and choose the destination, and click Export. A status bar pops up that says 'Encoding MVI" and runs for a few seconds then disappears. Then, nothing else happens. Nothing is rendered, but the file name does appear in the folder location as if it was created. However, when I open the file, I see a split-second of the video before it goes black and shows an orange road cone.

Here's what I've tried:

-Rendered the segments by clicking on Sequence>Render Selected with all segments selected. This does turn the red bar at the top into a green bar. But I get the same result when I try to export.
-Nested entire video into one sequence. Same result.
-Restarted program
-Restarted computer
-Saved files in a different location.
-Moved source files from external to internal storage
-Changed destinations: External hard drive, internal hard drive, local shared server
-Cut the video in half and tried to save just the first part. (What's really weird about this is that at first it seemed like this was working. The render progress window opened, and the saved file contained the video. But it disappeared when I came back from my meeting and tried to play it again.)

Can anyone help me figure this out? I'm almost to the point of throwing my chair.

Edit: I tried to add a video of this happening, but apparently my video hoster isn't YouTube so it's not valid. I can give you the link if you want it, but b/c of scammers I doubt you'll trust it enough to click anyway.

check the clips at this point.  You can probably narrow down the problem area by setting an in and out and rendering that section (you can also limit the render area by using the workspace area)

Ok, doing that now.

Uncheck Use Preview files in the export settings as wel as Hardware encoding.

No need to highlight the timeline.

Try queue instead of export or v.v.

Did you try my suggestion of changing your preview format to a high quality format and then gradually trying to render the piece.  You might also try exporting your base video layer in a high quality format such as proress422 (HQ) and then replacing that layer in your timeline.    mp4 is a highly compressed format and will probably not make things easier for your system.

And what exactly is the format of the audio file...  that could be causing the problem...

I'm trying it right now. Waiting on previews to render. I'll let you know.

The audio is an mp3. But I removed it from the sequence and didn't see any difference.

Well, about 2/3 of the way through the render, I got this:

Try exporting the first half, if that works you know the problem is in the 2nd half. Then export half of the second half and repeat till you find the clip. Cutting in half each time eliminates the largest portion each go round, you should have it in 4 or 5 exports.

(Sorry for the delay. I took time off for the holidays.)

Well, for those who are curious, I tried MyerPj's advice. I cut the video down to 1/8ths, attempting to export at the lowest possible quality each time, and none of them worked. So, I removed any layers that spanned the entire length, (i.e. adjustment layers and audio), and got the same result.

I still have not been able to successfully export the video in any way.

I think my only option now is to start from scratch and rebuild the video. One guess is that maybe importing the raw footage directly from the camera files is causing an issue? They are huge files, since I shot at 60fps, so I'm going to try to run the clips through Premiere, export them as mp4s, and use those in the sequence instead of the raw files. I also have some animations that are Ae files, so I will turn those into mp4s too.

Let me know if anyone cares about the outcome.

Depending on OS and preview codec choose a preset instead of match sequence settings.

Post screenshot export settings and error message.

will do

UPDATE: I am still working on isolating the offending file. Even though it is short, the video contains a lot of clips and animations, so it's a slow and painful process. (Plus I took a couple of days off for obvious reasons.)

I took my Premiere project home with me over the holidays and tried exporting it on my personal computer, which is more equipped for this kind of work. I had high hopes, but it gave the same result. I know now it's not a hardware or disk space issue. I will be working on this all day, so if anyone else has any advice, please jump in.

Thanks, and I hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

probably one or more elements are corrupt or a dicey format.  Couple of ways to troubleshoot.  Set your sequence preview format to a high quality format like prores422(HQ).  Render sections of your timeline.  Hopefully you'll find the problem areas.  If everything renders successfully, then do an export using previews...

Thank you. I'll try that.

Just for the quickness can you export In to Out having selected about 10 or 20 seconds somewhere in the timeline.

Yes, that worked.
