Red Frames on Proxy Media - Premiere Pro CC 2018

Hey,

it's 2018 and I'm still experiencing this issue. I know this has been around for a while. I'm using GoPro CineForm Proxies made from 4K mpeg files shot on a Panasonic GH5.

The Red frames occur on random clips when I play them back on the source monitor as well as on the timeline. Somtimes moving them to the timeline or restarting the program makes the frames dissappear.

I found a common known fix that involves turning off the accelerated Intel H.264 decoding. This got rid of the red frames as far as I have tested so far, BUT playback got so choppy that it was impossible to work.

I know there's a lot of stuff on this online, but so far I haven't been able to find a permanent fix.

Any help is appreciated,

Thank you

Deleting the media cache as well as the video previews has worked several times, but I have a massive project, so that sucks.

I am having the same impossible problem with GH5 footage. The MP4's play fine in VLC but when I tried to edit them in PP the project kept crashing, so I created proxies and a few of the key clips I need are RED FRAMING. I tried re-encoding them in both Media Encoder and in After Effects as MOV's and several other formats. When encoding them they solid red frame after a random time in the clip. I have also tried the suggestion on youtube to remove the H264 acceleration without any luck....deadline is looming....

Not sure if this addresses the proxy issue because I'm fairly new to Premiere Pro--but I have had the red frames issue several times with imported MP4s. I did uncheck the H.264 acceleration setting and that worked for a while. Then the problem recurred, and it occurred to me that it might be because of variable framerate, which seems to be a feature of MP4s. So I used Handbrake to encode the MP4s so that the video would have a constant framerate. That seems to have solved the problem--no more red frames! I haven't used it long-term yet, so don't know, but it seems like a solution to me right now.

I have same problem with a ProRes Proxy file that was recorded on a Blackmagic HyperDeck Studio Mini. What's weird is that the red frames only show up after about 30 mins into a 82 minute file. Ingest/Transcode did not help.

Next step is good 'old MPEG Streamclip. We'll see what happens.

MPEG Streamclip worked fine -- no more red frames. But very, very weird bug

I'm puzzled that turning off the H.264 acceleration made Cineform proxies choppy ... as they're not H.264, that switch shouldn't have any effect on them, but only the original media.

Just as a question, you have gone to the Program monitor's + icon, and pulled the Toggle Proxies icon from the available ones onto your Program monitor's control block, right? And are toggling to blue (proxies) and gray (original media)?

thanks for the quick reply! As it turns out I did not have the proxies toggeld on. Sorry, I took a long break from editing. It seems to work now. I'm still confused that the playback wasn't choppy before when I was editing with proxies off but H.264 acceleration on. I'll report back if anything changes!

Sure. Most people assume if you turn proxies on in general (in the Media Browser, setting that check box for "Ingest") ... that the app would naturally have the control available and use them. But it doesn't, and you have to both create the proxies AND set the control block in the Program monitor to toggle them.

So a ton of people don't see the second step. I've suggested that should be changed when you set for ingest proxies ...
