Question

Sequence settings 1080p but render as 4k?

I noticed that if my sequence settings are at 1080p instead of 4k editing is much faster, even if I drop the same (4k) footage in.

The question is do I loose any quality if I edit 1080p sequence and then render output as 4k?

Yes, you do. Edit in a sequence that matches your desired export specs. Use proxies to enhance performance.

Hello:

Keep your Sequence frame size at 4K and set the Video Previews frame size to 1920x1080 or 1280x720 in the Sequence Settings dialog box. You should see the same speed improvement while editing and while preserving full 4K when ready to export a fine cut.

Changing Video Previews frame size actually works!

I also tried changing Editing Mode to lower res - it made everything even faster but messed up the animations, so not usable... not sure if it's possible to have Editing mode in lower res than the composition res it self?

Further, I'd recommend using the nifty proxy process ... use the Cineform ingestion preset, do NOT use an inter-frame such as H.264.

Then you work with a 4k timeline, but can edit swapping out media from original to proxy with a click of an icon. And PrPro ALWAYS exports from the original media.

Thanks, I'm aware of Proxies and I'm using them. But even with them I do get lag on effect heavy transitions.
I did tried to render both options and saw slight difference in file size, I don't have 4k monitor or enough knowledge that's why I asked here.

I did noticed that in 1080p sequence it's a bit easier to work...

For doing a test export of a few seconds, make sure that the 're-import into PrPro' option is checked, then back in PrPro, play the clip ... with the program monitor set for 100%.

If the 4k footage is put on the timeline using "set to ... " ... probably not, give a test of a few seconds, which is faster than asking here I'd note ...

But if it was on the sequence using "Scale to frame-size" ... that would be a no-go. At that point, PrPro is seeing that media on that sequence as 1920x1080.

That's not correct. If he scales down the 4k footage for a 1080 sequence, and then scales that 1080 sequence back up for export, he'll be exporting uprezzed footage.
