Switching from Windows to Mac - What's the best proxy setup?

Hi - I currently use Windows for my Premiere work but am in the process of transitioning to Mac. I know, many are going the other way, but I'm going to go against the grain. 🙂

I saw some proxy setup suggestions in the community but wondered if anyone has an "ideal" setup...if one exists. On Windows, I usually use CineForm, saved in QuickTime format, at 1280x720, lowest quality settings, and it makes for smooth editing. With MacOS, I wondered if Apple ProRes 422 Proxy would be better than CineForm and would like the best performance when scrubbing and previewing. Thanks!

Thanks! I installed Premiere on my wife's 2015 13" MBP (dual core) and created a few test proxies using ProRes 422 Proxy at 720p. Things were surprisingly smooth but very slow. No lag, though, when jumping around the timeline in proxy mode. I didn't test any other settings, but it was great to know that things went well, and will only get better when I get the iMac.

I use Apple Prores 422 Proxy 720p. I've found that 720p helps with playback when attaching proxies to the raw. Or you can just cut with the proxies and reconnect to the raw later, which ever meets the need of the project you're currently on.

Feel free to give them both a try! 🙂 Or 3

ProRes 422 LT works well and ProRes proxy is 1/2 the data rate of LT, so that is a good choice, especially if you're used to the lowest quality settings in CineForm. I'm using CineForm on Windows - quality 3, which really works well.
