The microphone icon for the voice over feature is greyed out. How to fix?

I've been using the voice over function in the past, but yesterday when I went to use it, I noticed that it is grayed out. I rebooted PP and my PC, to no avail. Today, the same thing. What is the issue and how can I fix it?

I had this issue today too, realized that the icon would turn gray when I put my airpods in. Just decided to record with the speakers on my computer.

    Still an issue, recorded a voice over but it had echos.  Deleted it and now microphone icon is greyed out!  help!

    HI ymjauthor,

    Sorry for the issue. Go to Premiere Pro Preferneces > Audio Hardware & check the Default Input option. Change the audio hardware device & test.

      Sorry for the trouble. Please share a screenshot of Preferences > Audio Hardware and also the greyed out Microphone icon.

      What is the model number of the Audio Input device?
