Question

Video footage imports without audio

Hello,

I am stumped. There could be a really simple answer to this problem and i really hope there is but i cannot seem to work it out at all. I have about 25% of my students trying to import their footage (shot on handycams straight to SD cards) into Premiere pro and the footage imports fine, however no audio is attached.

Before these students imported the footage i made sure that they copied the clips across from the SD card onto their computer hard drives so we knew where all the media is and that its always linked. The original clips play audio outside of PP on both SD card and hard drive versions of the clips.

Once imported the clips don't show any waveforms. I asked the students to import bars and tone and they could all hear this without any problems, this ruled out any headphone or playback problems. none of the audio channels are muted and the volume is turned up, hence hearing the bars and tone.

This seems to be isolated to the import. The only way that the students have found that works is plugging in their SD cards while they edit, even though their projects are linked to the footage on the hard drive rather than the SD cards. If you unplug the SD cards the audio disappears yet you dont get any media offline messages.

The students are working with .MOV files.

Please help as this is causing mass panic in the classroom as none of the students can edit audio and their deadline is approaching.

Thank you,

Charlie

Couple things to check.

1. SOP is to copy the entire card.  Do not delete, move or rename anything from that card once on the hard drive.

2. While many formats will function properly with the normal Import command, some won't.  However, all formats will work properly when using the Media Browser for the task.

sorry im confused at what you just typed. SOP? are you telling me to do something or asking if i have done it? and if you are telling me what to do, where is the context?

SOP is to copy the entire card.  Do not delete, move or rename anything from that card once on the hard drive.

Will also happen if the Source Patching is not toggled on.

Hi,

the camera model that they are using are (Sony Handycam DCR-SX34) but these camera are recording and compressing to MOV files so the audio and video are together. We tried both importing from click and drag to also using the source monitor and both methods produced the same problem, video but no sound. i will have to double check the ingest setting, however this time, that shouldn't of had an effect as i made sure that they imported from the drive, not the card. Like i said before when they remove the card we arnt getting a media offline message, the audio just disappears.

The audio doesn't even play in the source monitor so this is not a timeline only problem, source patching isn't the issue here.

Ive been trouble shooting this problem for hours now and its just strange, i cant seem to find a logical reason why this is happening. PP works fine with MOV files so i dont see the problem. I will try compressing the footage to a different format to see if it retains the audio on import. but this shouldnt have to be the solution. In theory it should be as easy as shoot then edit.

Thank you for the help so far! but still the answer is a mystery!

What exact model camera was being used? Under normal circumstances, based upon what youve explained, Id say it's an issue of the media not being imported properly where the audio and video are stored as separate files (such as with P2 media). But you said they're MOV files which should maintain the audio/video streams in the single file.

Did you try using the Media Browser to import? Always the best way to do it. And to be extra safe, turn on the Ingest setting to Copy when they import off the card, which will auto copy the needed files to their drives.
