Question

Video will glitch and restart to beginning of file while audio plays normally

Hello,

I'm having an enormous issue with Premiere Pro right now where the video will occasionally glitch out and reset itself back to the first frame. The audio will play normally, following the ins and outs on each clip. The video however just decides to play from frame 0. There's not a consistent point where it happens across different videos, but it happens consistently within one file. I've loaded the clip in VLC and it plays back normally.

The footage I'm editing is HEVC shot on an iPhone 11. I've tried resetting preferences, deleting media cache, deleting render files, all the usual tricks. This bug is a huge time waster for me, please someone help me 🙂

This seems to only happen on Premiere for Windows. My other editors edit on Mac and don't have the same issue, but both of our Windows machines are affected by this bug.

MC Neil,

Hey there, thanks for posting. Terribly sorry for this issue. I hope to help you solve it. Please give us the precise system specs of your PC including make and model of your CPU and GPU. This will help us narrow down the issue so we can solve it.

The workaround for this bug is to transcode the footage in Handbrake or FFMPEG, use Software Only for the Mercury Playback Engine, or use a previous version of Premiere Pro.

Regards,
Kevin

IPhone hevc files are problematic mainly because of their variable frame rate.  Use Handbrake to convert to a constant frame rate and hopefully you'll be good to go.  And although you may not have this problem on a mac, you can have problems with a variable frame rate.
