Question

XMP and Clip metadata/ Media Browser / Markers

Hi all,

I'm working on a big project now that has a huge amount of footage. Everything has been transcoded to Prores proxy for offline editing and it's ready for logging.

The native footage has been transcoded in different computers to different drives (more than one Pegasus promise drive), meaning that what we have is a mix of transcoded footage merged and copied from more than one drive into several "master" drives to be used for editing.

We have projects for every shoot and the projects were again imported from various drives. We don't have a server where all the users could import the files from, we only have external drives. For this reason, the option "Write XMP ID to files on import" has been unchecked.

For logging purposes, we are investigating the Metadata options that Premiere pro offers, more precisely, XMP Metadata vs Clip metadata. I understand that XMP Metadata travels with the file itself and that the Clip metadata is associated with the project. Prores proxy are .mov files and I came to realize that the XMPs on .movs are embedded not sidecar files, making it really hard to "share/ copy and paste" XMPs from drive to drive in the case we wanted to use the XMP Metadata option to share logging notes and for all the users to read the notes that were added.

Questions are:

-Once files were imported into a project with the option "Write XMP ID to files on import" unchecked, is there any workaround to creating XMPs for those files (other than reimporting the files)?

- What is the benefit of having XMP files written if the footage that I have on my drive is a different copy from the one on my colleague's drive? If my file has an XMP generated from my Project, that XMP is technically different from the one generated on another drive/computer, correct?

-Is there any way to batch export embedded XMPs on .mov files? This way I may be able to copy/paste onto another drive.

- If all of the above is not possible, I'm leaning towards using the Clip metadata option.

But I wonder, is there's any way for the clip metadata information to "travel" through different projects. Meaning that if I'm importing a clip from a project (through browsing a project with the media browser) with clip metadata, is the clip metadata for the clip I'm selecting going to show in my project?

I see that the option " Linking the clip and XMP metadata" could help. I understand that this option means that the clip metadata gets added to the XMP metadata, which apparently forces me to have XMPs written on all files, so it may not be useful?!

- Media browser: Is there any way to search metadata via the media browser? I mean using the search tool, without locating the files manually.

I believe it's not possible, so I wonder if Adobe is planning on working on this for future updates?

- Clip Markers vs Sequence Markers.

In regards to Clip Markers I believe that what is more convenient is to have the option "Write clip markers to XMP" unchecked in order to have clip markers visible on all edit stations with different hard drives. So, that's ok.

What I would like to know is:

Why are clip markers not visible as a list on the Markers panel? For example, if I select more than one clip with clip markers, they don't show as a list on the panel (as sequence markers do). Is Adobe going to work on this?

-Another feature that would be super useful in Premiere pro would be the option of copying and pasting markers. Is that ever going to be possible?

In summary:

I would like to clarify what are the pros and cons of having XMP written or not, given the current scenario (not having a centralized server, just external drives).

I would like to know if Adobe is going to work on the Media browser searching options, to search by name and metadata.

I would like to know if the Markers feature is going to be optimized. Can they be copied and pasted? Can multiple clip markers from multiple files be visible as a list on the Markers panel?

Thanks!

I'm about to start editing a Feature Documentary with all footage transcoded to ProresLT and the AEs are about to start logging footage to make it keyword searchable. However, there's one big caveat with Merged Clips. The Markers on Merged Clips render themselves "globally" un-searchable, meaning when you type a key word into "Filter Bin Content" it ignores Merged Clips. You can click on a Merged Clip and search markers within it but you can't type in a key word in hopes of populating a list of all clips that contain your key word. I've tests this using XMP vs Clip metadata and still yield the same results.  The only way "global" search works is if the markers are on the original imported media. However, I can't edit un-synced footage. There's a PluraEyes solution to avoid using Merged Clips but it comes with it's own bugs and limitations when turning over to post sound. I could theoretically export all the Merged Clips using Media Encoder and bring them back into Premiere but that too would erase all original sound metadata.

Any known solutions to this problem?

One strategy, which seems insane, is to create one long Sequence that contains all the footage of the entire project (Ok maybe 3, 20hr Sequences!). In those Sequences the AEs would sync all the footage and then log by dropping markers on the Sequence not the clip. I open the markers tab, can click on 1 of 3 Sequences, and quickly do a keyword search, then quickly hop to that footage by clicking on the thumbnail. Everything about this tells me it's a fool's errand. Maybe I should just abandoned the markers idea and have them sort subclips into Bins, although I've heard horror stories delivering with Subclips. Please don't make me go back to Avid.

RameezKhan, do you or Kevin or anyone have any advice for this?

Jason's reply is good ... I'd just add, PLEASE file that feature request over being able to search by meta in the Browser panel. Currently you need to use Bridge or Prelude if you're looking for the media with "x" entered somewhere in metadata ... you can't in PrPro. The only thing you can search by in the Media browser is file type ... not all that useful for much of my work.

I asked for this (ahem) some time ago, and would love to have this available.

Thanks, Neil!

Will do. Actually, I already did, but will do it again.

Neil, how do you search for clip metadata added in a Ppro project with Bridge or Prelude?

That may help me somehow.

All the best,

Carla

Well done, you know more about XMP and metadata then 99% of users already

A couple quick answers:

-There isn't a way to batch export XMP files out of Premiere. The closest you can get is to select the clips in the project panel and re-export them, making sure to go to the Metadata window in the Export Settings window and select Create Sidecar file... this will work even if you're exporting to MOV. But this doesn't really work for your needs at this stage unfortunately.

- You can't currently search metadata in the Media Browser window. Sounds like a great feature request though! Feature Request/Bug Report Form - Adobe

- Markers can't be copied and pasted.

- As for displaying clip markers for more than one clip, it's sort of an all or nothing thing. Typically, if NO clips are highlighted, you see all sequence markers. BUT if you click the Panel menu for the Markers panel you can select "Show all clip markers in sequence" and then if nothing is highlighted, it shows EVERY clip marker. But I don't think there is a way to just show the clip markers for, say, 2 or 3 highlighted clips at once.

- Clip metadata is "safer" but can be less useful depending on your setup and workflow. I think you've figured that part out already. I was still a bit unclear as to if you guys have duplicates of the media on different drives or if all drives have unique media on them and if you guys are working in the same office or remotely, etc.

Hope some of this helps!

Thanks very much, Jason!  yes, I did a lot of research about Metadata

Just a couple of follow-up questions.

- For exporting sidecar XMPs: It looks like I can only see the Metadata window when exporting one file at a time. So, in order to export  XMP sidecar files in batches, I'm wondering if there's a way to create an export preset for Media Encoder to export the file plus sidecar XMP. I couldn't find a way to do it.

- Clip markers on Markers panel: This is amazing info! Since when can you do this? Is this feature new?

- XMP Metadata vs Clip Metadata: I believe I have no choice but to use Clip Metadata.

We are working remotely, a portions transcoding were made in different locations, we then merged the transcodes to create a master drives with all transcodes. This master drive has been cloned for the different edit suites.

Then from the master clones, we created projects from all the different shoots. The project creation occurred in different locations.

So the XMP option for creating XMPs on import was unchecked, to avoid creating XMP that will ultimately be different for the various duplicated/cloned files at different locations.

So I believe that Clip metadata is a safer bet for the current workflow. I like to know if there's a workaround for the clip metadata to travel through projects. For example, if I import a file clip metadata from one project to another, would the clip metadata be carried onto the project that I'm importing the file to?

All the best,

Carla
