Can't open my .chm

New Here ,
Aug 31, 2009 Aug 31, 2009

Hello!  I recently switched from RH 5 to 8.0.0.203.
I can not open the .chm files I generate. I get this message from MS Window Capture.PNG

Any advise?

.chm files cannot be opened on a server; copy it to a location on your local machine.

Good luck,

Leon

Tom

1] Pretty sure this is covered so please try a search first.

2] I edited your post to remove you email address. Email addresses on any forum are a good source for spam address harvesters. So unless you are expecting your wealthy Nigerian uncle to pop his clogs, best avoided in posts.

Peter, I did the search as you suggested, but found nothing that matched my problem (perhaps because I'm none too bright ).
While there were plenty of somewhat similar articles, none addressed an inability to open chm and receive a windows message that simply states "can't open it."

This is just a single CHM, correct?

Right click it in Windows Explorer and select Properties. See if there is a check box about it being a downloaded file.

Will do, Peter.

May be an hour or so before I can respond.

Thank you!

Peter,

This is a single CHM.

I checked the properties. The only check boxes available are:

General tab

Read Only (unchecked)

Hidden (unchecked)

Advanced Button

File is ready for archiving (checked)

For fast search allow Indexing.......(checked)

Compress contents.........(unchecked)

Encrypt contents.....(unchecked)

Hi there

I think another question is appropriate here.

Are you able to open *ANY* CHM files on this PC?

If the answer is no, you have a basic Windows issue that needs to be addressed. If the answer is that you are able to open other CHMs, there is an issue with only this project.

So before attempting to troubleshoot further, you need to determine the scope of the problem.

Cheers... Rick

Tried two other CHMs, which opened correctly.

Questions:

Would reloading RoboHelp 8 help any?

If so, can I reload over the 8 that is there, now?

Should RoboHelp 5 been removed prior to loading 8?

Hi there

Personally, I'd doubt reloading will help you. It may, but I doubt it will.

Have you tried opening one of the sample projects and attempting to compile that to CHM? Or possibly create a totally new project and see if that compiles.

My gut feeling on this is that you have an issue with only this project. You might even find that creating a totally new Single Source Layout will resolve it. If you choose to try that, be sure to create from scratch instead of duplicating the existing layout. If you duplicate, any issue that would be present would be carried along into the new one.

You also probably want to click Tools > Options > General tab and ensure your Output View is showing. If you have hidden it (I keep mine hidden) it may come in handy to help isolate where things are falling apart.

Cheers... Rick

Rick,

Your gut feeling was right. Something was corrupted in that one project.

Thank you!
