Headers and Footers Missing in Printed Output

I accept the fact that I can't specify the headers and footers that RH9 directly creates when generating a Word document. Now I have the opposite problem as they aren't created at all in my Word output. Any idea as to how I can get RH9 to generate these again?

Peter, thanks for your questions. They prompted me to run several tests, all using my existing project.  With the first 7 tests, I saved my output to a server location, all with the same results, no matter if I used styles from a stylesheet or MS Word template.

In my last test, #8, which was exactly the same as #7 except I saved the output to my desktop, the headers/footers appeared!

Does that make sense?  I don't think I've resolved the source of my problem, but at least it will allow me to continue with my project.  If you want to troublshoot/explore this more, I can provide you with more info.

Thanks again for your help with this.  I have another question about hotspot formatting remaining in my Word document, but will start a new thread for that one.

Hi Ellen

Can you describe or post a screen shot of what you are seeing? This isn't making much sense.

Hello again

Well, you said you got one result off a server. I was thinking it would be a screen capture showing what the page looked like when you did it this way. And another screen capture showing what it looked like when local. And probably a third screen capture showing what the topic looked like in RoboHelp.

Let me describe the results.

When I generated a Word doc from my RH9 project and saved it to a server location, the Word doc did not have the typical RH9-generated headers or footers. See Peter's site http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/printing/rh9_printing.htm that has a discussion about the headers and footers generated by RH9 if you want to know what I mean about the "typical RH9-generated headers and footers" referenced above.  His comments appear near the bottom of the page under the section titled "The Standard Output and Changes."

When I generated a Word doc from my RH9 project and saved it to my desktop, the resulting Word doc had the typical RH9-generated headers and footers. Again, reference Peter's site mentioned above if you want to know what I mean about "typical RH9-generated headers and footers."

There are no problems with the online WebHelp files, so I'm not going to address this.

I understand the headers and footers included in a master page or topic file do not carry over into the Word output (which is too bad). If I am misinformed about this, please educate me as I would rather maintain one set of headers and footers in my RH9 project file, rather than having to recreate them in my Word output.

Well that's a first!

What are you mapping to, a CSS file or a Word template and if the latter, what template?

Where are you generating to, a local drive or a network path?

Does this happen in other projects? If necessary create a new single topic project or use one of the samples. Click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.
