Question

How do I update linked FM files without losing TOC entries or Map IDs?

Hi,

I'm using RH 10 with linked FM 11 files to create a WebHelp project and this is what happens when I do an update or force update of a linked file in the RH project:

  • After the update, the topic that contains updated content gets deleted from project TOC in RH.
  • After the update, any Map IDs assigned to the topic that contains the updated content are deleted.

Can someone please advise how to update a linked file without losing TOC entries or Map IDs?

Thanks a bunch!

Gabe

HI Gabe,

You will want to link the TOC from FM in your conversion settings, and set the map id's via TopicAlias markers in FM.

Hi Matt,

Can you point me to the dialog for linking the TOC in my conversion settings? Is it Project Settings > Edit conversion settings for FM > ?

I'll research TopicAlias markers in FM...

Jeff, I was setting up both the TOC and Map IDs in RH - sounds like I need to set it up to come from FM.

Thanks!

Just update as with any other change in content.  Before going crazy with the markers, you only need to mark things that will *not* be split into their own topics. Those can be mapped via the topic title, and won't need a TopicAlias marker.

OK, thanks. So back to the TOC issue - I just created a TOC as you advised (selecting Convert FM TOC) and then I tried the same scenario - I upated some text in the source FM file, and then  updated the linked file in RH and looked at the new TOC and the same thing happens - the topic that contained the change is missing from the TOC. What am I missing?

Thanks again,

Gabe

2 questions - where's your ToC coming from? FM or RH? and how are you doing your Map IDs? Are they set in FM as marker text or are you assigning them in RH?
