Individual chapters through Printed Documentation

Explorer ,
May 08, 2013 May 08, 2013

I have a query in RoboHelp 10. When I create Word or PDF (Individual chapters) through Printed documentation, it does not create hyperlinks. I am using MS Word 2003

So don't create individual chapters.

The problem is a by-product of that method. Only links between topics in the same document get created. If you create a single book, the links will be there.

A single book is not getting created as it is a very heavy file. That is why I opted for Individual chapters. Even the links within the chapter are not getting created. I have also enabled the option "Retain Hyperlinks"

Define "heavy". Roughly how many pages would it be.

Do you get the same problem with the sample projects? Try Employee Care. Click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.

Single file is getting created for small projects. But the problem is with big project of 900 pages. My system gets hanged. It is only getting created if I select individual chapters.

It would still help to know that Employee Care works OK so that we do know the issue is document size.

How much memory do you have on the PC?

I tried generating PDF (single document) for Employee Care, and it is not getting created. It is getting hanged. But the individual chapters are gtting created without hyperlinks. I have 2GB memory in my machine.

PDF can have its own issues, working with Word only is the answer for now while we work on this.

When you talk about individual chapters in post 6, are you talking about Employee Care or your project?

2gb of memory is simply not enough so I can understand the single document failing. I'm not seeing how that can affect hyperlinks within a chapter.

Can you install in trial mode on a machine with at least 4gb of memory?

If not, create a build tag called Exclude or similar and use the Topic List to apply it to all but say 100 or so topics. Then create another Print layout and apply a build expression NOT Exclude.

See if that fares any better.

Individual chapters were getting created for my project but for Employee Care, nothing was working.

But when I tried to generate individual chapters after applying the Exclude tag, it was getting generated. However, the hyperlinks are still not working. And my main problem is that the links are not working.

This is bizarre as Employee Care is much smaller than your project so the lack of memory should have been less of an issue. I realise the links not working is the key problem.

When you generate, are you mapping to a Word template or to a CSS?

If you create a new project with two topics with hyperlinks to each other, do you still have the problem?

Are there any error messages in the Output View?

I created a new project with 2 topics and hyperlinks to each other. I generated individual chapters by selecting the Microsoft Word Template radio button. From the "Apply CSS to all topics" drop down list, I selected Stylemapping.css. But still hyperlinks are not working. No error message.

I think it doesnt work with individual chapters.

Sorry, my mistake. You will need three topics. Two in one chapter and the third in another.

Make sure when using the Word template you use the supplied Style Mapping template.

If you see an option for DOC or DOCX, make sure you use DOC.

You say you think it does not work with individual chapters. Did you try single document as well? If not, do try that option with this small project.

After that, can you share the project with me? See the Contact page on my site and send the project as instructed there. Do make sure you include a link to this thread and please do not email the project direct.

I have tried with 3 chapters and 5 chapters as well. But the hyperlinks are not working with individual chapters. As i told you, single document is getting created but only for small projects. So, it is getting created for this one too with links.

I am using the supplied Style Mapping template.I cannot see the option for DOCX or DOC.

I cannot share the project with you as it is a confidential one.

But please let me know do links work with individual chapters??

You had previously told me you had been able to create a single document but you had not said whether or not the links in it worked. So now we know that you can generate a smaller single document and the links will work. What you cannot do is create the full document at all and if you go to individual documents, no links work, even to topics in the same document.

I just tried on a Rh 9 machine and it errors when I try the individual documents in a small project but it is not a new project. I will test again on another project using both Rh9 and Rh10 but it will not be today.

There's not much more I can do after that if you cannot share the project. The help would not enable me to build an application so is it really so confidential. You should see some of the projects that have been shared with me! If I made anything public, Adobe would strip me of my ACP status and that is too useful to me to risk. Your call, I don't have a problem.

I want to help but after I have run my own tests, I will not be able to do more.

Actually I opted for individual chapters only because single document was not getting created for heavy files. I cant share the file as it is company's project file and I am not allowed to do share it. So, please test whether individual chapters dont work with links at all. If yes, then I guess I have to increase the memory of my machine to create a single document.

In both Rh9 and Rh10 single documents will not contain working links. I suspect the logic is you would have so many broken links that it is better to have none.

Whilst the size of your document is such that you would be stretching things in a single document anyway, it might well work with more memory. Cannot guarantee that.

I didn't test in Rh8 but if it worked there, you should report this as a bug.

As earlier, I think this is by design to avoid masses of broken links between the individual documents. You could submit it is a feature request (same link) but I have not seen anyone ask for it before and I suspect that most people do create a single document anyway.

2gb is very low nowadays so I suggest you first course of action is to see if 4gb would enable you to create a single document.

Ok. I will get my RAM upgraded but only if you are sure that in RoboHelp 10, single document for heavy files get generated? Could you please try in your machine so that I am sure that upgrading the RAM would resolve the issue.

How can I be sure your document will generate if you are not able to share it with me?

I have a document of over 1,000 pages but that does not guarantee yours will work on your machine. You may have more graphics or whatever that could affect the generation. Whilst memory is important, there could also be other factors.

Perhaps you have access to another machine on which you could install the trial version of Rh?

I do not have access to another machine where I can install the trial version.

I have a quite a number of graphics in my document but single document was getting generated in RoboHelp 8 with the same memory. The issue is in RoboHelp 10 that it gets hanged.

I just want to know if your 1000 pages document is working with links in RoboHelp 10 with 4GB memory?
