PDF links don't work in WebHelp

Explorer ,
Feb 07, 2008 Feb 07, 2008
We have a big project, with a few issues.

We have externally linked to some PDF files, which are in both Windows Explorer, and the baggage file list. The folder structure contains a special folder to store PDFs, which is titled PDF. Since there are several these, we have subfolders for the PDFs. Anyway, the links work in the viewer and IE7, but do not work once generated into WebHelp. The WebHelp directory also shows the PDFs as being there. Ideas?

What is the MAX length for a file name reference? We have underscores turned on.

Is there another way besides manually to clean up 500 files that contain smart quote characters?

Excellent Peter! This solved the problem. What about max characters for file names?

Welcome to the forum.

Is that webhelp viewed locally (links to PDF won't work) or webhelp viewed from a server (they should work)?

Peter,

Being tested out locally for now, but will eventually be moved to a server.

Hi opub

If you want to test locally to ensure things will work when you move to a server, try DE-selecting the "Add Mark of the Web" check box option when you generate. This is the option that kills the links when viewing locally.

Cheers... Rick

I think CHM outputs hit a limit but not webhelp. That said, always keep it short and I recommend avoiding spaces. Personally I also stick to lower case.

ch1 rather than 'This is chapter one of my so cool help' :-)
