Printed Documentation - crashes RH 7

When I generate a Word (or PDF) printed document, RH crashes.

I have followed the advice by FredWBrown (i.e. Help > Repair Adobe Reader Installation) but still no joy.

Any suggestions welcome.

Using RoboHelp HTML 7 (version 7.01.001) and Adobe Reader 8.1.2

Sorry, I don't know about Vista, but I used to do this when my PC had just 1 GB of RAM.

Now it has 2 GB of RAM, and the VM setting in Win XP is 1536 MB (the default, I think). Look up virtual memory in Vista help; consult your PC support expert as well.

Jared,

Have you tried adjusting the size of the disk page file? (Virtual memory, in Control Panels > System > Advanced > Performance)

No I haven't tried that; I'm not exactly sure the implications of changing those settings. I'm using Vista and it's set to letting the system manage it. It is set to 2547 MB and I have 2046 MB RAM.

Try one of the sample projects.

Also please advise at exactly which point does it crash.

One suggestion that might help: Try to export just a small portion of your project as printable output and see if that works. Then gradually increase until bad things happen. This may help you locate a problem topic.

From my tests, it seems that Word chokes if you send too much information to it via this export process. I have a rather large project (1500+ pages when printed) and I have to break it up into manageable sections of maybe 5-10 books per export and then combine them manually inside Word later. If I try to do the whole thing, sometimes RH or Word hang, sometimes images don't appear in the text and so on.

Hi PDF Boy
Am clicking Next and working through the Wizard (I saw this advice earlier).

Hi,

Does this happen all the time or is it sporadic as per my RH 7 crashing problem?

Hi Peter - Yes, used the same project and No, not over the network. The memory is the same. The dot template is home grown but worked nicely on my colleague's OK. Normally it crashes before I get chance to change any of these settings.

Are you clicking Finish straight away or clicking next and going through the wizard? I found the same whilst directly clicking finish.

It's an option that will not take much time.

Did you use the same project and please tell me it is not on a network drive? If it is on a network, that is almost certainly the issue.

Does your colleague's PC have more memory?

Which dot template? A home brewed or style mapping?

Trouble is there are many other causes to rule out before spending money.

What option are you selecting in the last page of the wizard, Use CSS or a Word template, if latter which one? Try style mapping just to see if it stops the crash.

Then see Print Issues on my site.

I have just been through the procedure on a colleague's PC - with success!

It makes me think something is wrong with my version of RoboHelp. Do you suggest I un-install and re-install?

(am using a dot template)

You say you are using Adobe Reader. That does not create PDFs.

Try generating the Word document first and then creating the PDF from that using whatever PDF creation tool you have.

It could be a memory issue. Generation of the printed output and PDF in one step can be intensive.

Thanks Peter
It is whilst creating a .doc (prior to PDF) that I am having the problem. I will check the memory as you suggest.
