I’m using RH HTML 9.0.1.232 and am trying to figure out how to generate printed documentation using a Microsoft Word 2007 template. I know how to map the RH styles to Word styles, but I haven’t been able to figure out exactly how to do two things.
First, is there a way to create a cover page for the Word template that will automatically be included when RH generates the document? So far I haven’t figured out how to do this. I want to include a cover page in the template, and have RH generate the document starting with the TOC on the second page of the doc. Right now we have to cut and paste the cover page each time we generate a new document, which is rather tedious. Update: I just figured out that I can include a word document in the section layout. Duh. Thank you, Peter's helpful Printed Output guide.
Second, I would like to get the TOC to be generated as a numbered outline (multi-level list) like this:
I’ve tried setting each heading style to a number format, but the TOC doesn’t interpret it as one big outline multi-level list and has one list for Header 1, a separate continuing list for Header 2, etc., so it looks in the TOC like this:
1.1 Header 2
1.2 Header 2
1.3 Header 2
1.4 Header 2
1.1.1 Header 3
1.1.2 Header 3
1.5 Header 2
1.1.3 Header 3
1.1.4 Header 3
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The TOC part has to be done by editing the Word template you are using when you generate.
Back it up before you start editing.

Do you happen to know how to do that in the Word template? Is it a Word TOC Styles modification or is there some way to alter the TOC that RH generates and make it a numbered list without messing up the formatting? I realize that’s a Word support question so please forgive me.

Yes you have to modify the TOC styles in Word. I'm not sure how, it is something that I would just go into a copy of the template and hack around but I think it should be possible.
I don't have the bandwidth to try it right now so give it a whirl and see what happens. Post back if you cannot fix it and I will look when I can.

I'd recommend starting here - I have added custom numbering (and bulleting) schemes using these instructions. I am not the author 🙂
