Word will crash when we attempt to create a new topic. Does anyone have any idea what might cause this?

Copying a pasting will carry hidden stuff and that is likely what is causing the crashing so no surprises there. Copy and paste into a text editor and then copy and paste from there.

There may be another way but either this is a topic or the whole project.

You could first try importing all the docs into a new project just to see if that makes any difference.

Try those two things and then come back.

I had the same problem in a RH6 file with Word 2003. The file is about 10 years old and has seen several versions of Word and RH. This is what we did to resolve it:
1. Start with the document that is causing the crash when you add topics. Copy all the text from that document and paste it into Wordpad.
2. Save and close the document within RH, then delete the document from the RH topics folder.
3. Create a new document and give it the same document name as the corrupt document.
4. Copy your text from Wordpad and paste it into the new RH document. Erase the footer text from in front of the heading names and recreate the topics. Since you didn't delete the map file (provided that you use the same topic ID), RH remembers the map ID, so you won't have to fill them in again.

You will need to repeat this process for other documents that are causing crashing as well.

Okay I think I have pretty much tried everyone's suggestions. Still not working. I had some luck with just deleting files that I was able to identify as corrupt and then I got it to work but trying to rebuild by copying and pasting just didnt work. It just caused the same problems. Adobe support doesnt seem to be helping much at all, my only hope is the public. If anyone any other ideas. I'm willing to try just about anything now.

The size zipped is about 30.4 mb expands to just under 400mb. Yeah I thought about trying that, I was hoping the solution was easier.

OK time to get drastic. We are agreed it is the project, right?

Create a copy. Trash half the topics and see if it still crashes. If yes, trash half of what is left. Keep going until it stops crashing. Then you know which bunch of topics is causing the problem

Take a fresh copy and trash everything but those topics. Then trash some of them. Got the idea?

How big is the project zipped up?

OK so what we have established is the problem is with your project rather than RH itself.

Take a copy of the project and save it somewhere safe.

Check your project settings and make sure it is pointing to Word 2003.

Try deleting the RTF files and then reopening the project so that it creates new ones.

See a recent post about RunTime Error 49 and follow the instructions there for updating the templates.

Deleted the RTF and HPR files.
Is pointing to Word 2003.
Templates updated.

No change, still crashes.

Just one project, its the only one we work on. It appears to work just fine if we start a new project. The project is a WinHelp 2000 project. Any idea how to fix this issue?

You've told me what is happening with your upgraded project, which is not a previously reported problem but you haven't answered my other questions.

All projects or just one?

Have you tried a new project?

It is an an existing project from Robohelp 5 I believe. We recently got robohelp 7, we are using word 2003 and when we attempt to create a new topic in word 2003 winword.exe will crash.

An error message for microsoft office will pop-up with Appname: winword.exe AppVer: 11.0.8134.0 AppStamp 461557b7
fdebug: 0 Offset: 009bd929
