RH8-Question about setting up RoboSource Control 3.1

I am using RH8 and I want to use RoboSource Control 3.1 to manage a project with two authors.  One author will be working remotely.  When a file is checked out, does the connection to the server need to be maintained or can it be worked on locally and then checked back in?

With RH8 the source files should always be on a local drive. It is only at the point that you interact with RSC (e.g. check in or check out) that your remote author will need access to the server.

Can you please tell me how we can establish a connection when the server is at the home office and the employee is working remotely.  When trying to connect to the data base we get an error saying:  Can someone help please?
