Which hhc.exe does RH5/RH9 use?

Explorer ,
Dec 21, 2012 Dec 21, 2012

Which is the actual help compiler that an RH9 installation (or RH5/X5) is using? I found there is a hhc.exe

on one of my machines in c:\program files (x86)\Microsoft HTML Workshop but on the other machine on which I installed RH9 and RH5 recently there is no hhc.exe at all. Is it hidden somewhere in the bundles that Adobe RH installs?

That is the one Christoph. You will need to install the HTML Help Workshop on these other PCs. It is not installed by RH as it is a Windows component that should normally be already there.

Wait a minute: On that XP machine I did a search over the complete C:\ drive and it revealed no HHC.EXE being there but RH5 and RH9 run on this machine.

Thus my question: Which Microsoft HTML Help compiler do they use then?

I believe Rh does use its own installation and a search will not reveal either. I'm digging.

That would be interesting to know. Would be good if I could insert a hook program that intercepts the command line parameters of whichever hhc.exe is invoked.

Near as I can tell, RoboHelp is using an application named HHLauncher.exe.

I thought that too, but when I replaced HHLAUNCHER.EXE with my own , I found that it is not invoked when e.g. starting to generate a HTML Help Project. Will look again into it, though.

What exactly is your goal here? What is it that you hope to achieve by using your own version of a compiler? I'm guessing you modified it in some way?

Cheers... Rick

My aim is it to intercept the command line to see what parameters are passed to hhlauncher (hhc) if it ain't just the name of the .hhp file. That's all in the course of finding out why map IDs do not appear in the merged HTML HELP chm under RH9 which do in X5.

I found so far that the merged.ali file is incomplete. If I merge manually the complete aliases of the sub-projects into that file, it works. I'll open again a new thread on this issue soon.
