Adobe Stock videos (.MOV) not playable once downloaded. Error message "APCH Format" not supported

Have been downloading Adobe Stock videos for a few years and all has worked fine. Today however, once videos are downloaded to my PC they will not play. In WIN10, I get no message on fail in Windows Media Player. However, on my WIN11 system I received from Media Player "APCH format not supported".

Files download as notmal, just will not play. I have previous .MOV files on my system and they play as normal.

Any Ideas would be appreciated!

As @WendellaBee said, you are missing the CODEC. The CODEC is a piece of code (program) that tells your computer, how to decode the video and audio stream of that video. The file type .mov is only a container file, containing multiple differently coded videos.

APCH seems to be an Apple ProRes format. You should be able to playback this with VLC https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html. I've also heard, that PotPlayer is able to play back this codec, but I've never used that one: https://potplayer.daum.net

@Eric22887744hnlv is it all videos or one particular video? Could you provide the asset ID of the files that are giving this error? Have you confirmed that you don't have any pending Windows Updates?

This happens to me too, with every MOV file I've paid for with ADOBE STOCK.

Check if you have the correct CODEC. What is your OS?

Here is an example of one of the videos that would download. File size was large but will not play on Win10 or Win11

Both PC's have the latest updates.

This error is caused when Windows is missing the codec to play the file. If you google the error code you'll be able to find solutions for the error.

Both programs are freeware.

You may also find in the Windows store the codec for the Microsoft player. And Apple offers the codec for Windows for "compatible applications": https://support.apple.com/kb/dl2033?locale=en_GB

As the Apple info is from 2020, you can try to import the asset into your video editor first, to see if the codec is supported by default, first to installing the Apple codec. If you use Adobe Premiere Pro, I would suggest, you ask in the forum for Premiere Pro, if you still have trouble after trying to import.

(Be careful when downloading from third party sites. Other sites may distribute malware instead of the correct codec, so try always only trusted sources.)

Yes, everything worked normally. When on my PC the video would not play. I have other .mov videos that I have downloaded previously from Adobe and they view fine with zero issues. It was only today that I was receiving this issue

I'm having the exact same issue. Asset id #284366418. I just downloaded two others with no issue just minutes before this one so I am sure it is not my computer.

What is your OS and version? What player do you use to playback the asset.

The probability is high that your player does not support the CODEC of this file, or that you need to install the CODEC for this file.

According to the stock page, the CODEC is ProRes, which is a high-quality CODEC.

The VLC  player should play the asset, IMHO.

Again, I just downloaded two other videos right before this one in exactly the same manner on to the same computer. This is a bug on Adobe's side.

No, it's probably a missing CODEC. What were the asset IDs of the other videos?

You can decide not to answer my questions, but if you ignore them, I'm sorry, but I can't help as I could. I'm here to help, not to blame anyone. Problems can be solved with cooperation.

If you downloaded the asset, and the download went well, then the CODEC issue is the most plausible.

Would a CODEC issue happen if we tried multiple other computers and devices? I'm not at my computer so I don't have the other IDs at the moment. I'm communicating and being as cooperative as I'm able to be. This just doesn't make sense.

Yes, the CODEC is a program you need to know how to decode the video. So if the CODEC is missing on all your computers, you will have the issue on all your computers.

Let me put it like this: as long as you do not answer my questions, you won't get help. It makes a lot of sense.

What is your OS and version? What player do you use to play back the asset?

Not all videos on the stock site are using the same CODEC, so its possible that some will work and some will not.

Yes, some work, some don't. But with the correct CODEC all play.

yes exactly. just pointing out that having some working videos doesnt mean the problem is with Adobe, and can still be on the local computer.

that being said, I've been having this issue as well. I downloaded every codec I could think of. Nothing would work. The way I finally fixed it was using Opera GX to download it. I have no idea why that made the file work when downloading it in Chrome and Edge wouldnt work... but here we are.

In rare cases, trying to redownload an asset, where the first try failed, will fail again, because of proxy servers or caches. Using a different browser ma circumvent the issue.
