Trouble Importing.ai file

I just downloaded a vector image. When I went into inkscape to upload the .ai file, it gives me a "failed to load the requested file..." error

Hi David,

I apologize for the troubles that you're facing.

Are you trying to open the file on a different app?

.ai files can be launched with Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop (with some limitations) the best.

Can you try to open the file on Adobe Illustrator as it should be working fine there?

Like this previous user I also would like to open ai files in the Inkscape Application.  How would I do that?
