Recognizable property release

I'm looking for some guidance on property releases for "recognizable property".  For instance, iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge are certainly "recognizable property".  Are releases needed for them?  And if so, are there any suggestions for obtaining such releases?  On the other end of the scale, an obscure shop on a street corner is certainly recognizable by its owner; if they are not the focus of the image, is a release still needed?

To give you some idea, it is a good idea to read and look through this list Adobe has put out:

As for the corner shop, if it has some logo, or other identifiable marking, then probably yes, it will need a release!

    Eifel tower needs a property release for night pictures. The illumination is protected...

    The Atomium in Brussels is protected by a specific law.

    You see, property release needs can only be judged case by case.

    Generally speaking, architectural objects are protected by (c) law so you need to be careful if the object is the main subject of your picture. Skylines are in general not protected.

    To add to the confusion, there are different rules for editorial use and general use.

    If you can get a release get it to be on the secure side.
