Cannot update texture maps in Stager when model is pushed from Substance Painter

This issue has been killing me. If a model is sent to stager from painter, then you cannot replace any of the maps individually from within stager.

Example:

You have a model in stager, you've moved it around, and even duplicated it. Now you need to make a base color change to one small component. ,You don't want to redo all of the layout work you've done in stager, but there is no refresh from Painter function. Furthermore, you might have displacements set to a high resolution that took a while to process. If you reimport, you'll have to wait on that again. You think, no problem. I'll just export an updated base color map from painter and import that into the base color channel that you TOTALLY DO HAVE ACCESS TO in Stager. Nope not allowed. Your only option is to edit it within photoshop, paste in your new basecolor map, and then it works.

I could understand this being locked out if it broke communication between Painter and Stager, except there is no communication between Painter and Stager. Once Painter sends something to Stager, it's static and any changes need to be resent from Painter.

Thanks Cyril,

It's disappointing to hear that this issue won't likely be fixed anytime soon. There are so many advantages to Stager, but its limitations make it an unrealistic rendering platform for our small team.

I'll look into your layout tip for the remainder of this project. Thank you!

Thanks!

Another thing is that once you start editing your images in Photoshop, you're stuck editing everything in Photoshop because if you resend anything from Painter, you'll lose all of your edits.

Hi @Lohn_Thom,

As you and Alexandre mentioned, the current "send to" doesn't update the current mesh and this is a real pain when working iteratively, which is most of the time.

We are aware of this issue, and this is something that is discussed, but unfortunately, I wouldn't expect a change on this regard soon.

With that being said, you shouldn't lose all of your layout work. You can delete the lastly imported mesh and apply its material on the already placed 3D models. I agree it's still a tedious workflow (especially if you have many UDIMs), but at least you shouldn't lose the layout work.

Best regards,
