I can confirm that my issue does lie with the Roboto font. My workaround is still the original fix suggested by @rob day as I have pre-existing projects I still need to manage, but the other solution will resolve the issue from the get-go. This is just one problem we face with cloud-based asset retention and font activation, but that's a discussion for another thread.

Thanks @Mike_Gondek - that worked for me! Does anybody know why this is even a View option in Illustrator - to Hide/Show Edges? Just seems to be a pointless addition to me.

Hi Uwe This is an interesting discovery as the client's templates I am having problems with uses the Roboto family also. I shall do some tests to see if that helps me. Best regards Eddie

Hi Tibo5CBE I've just downloaded your file to test it and get exactly the same problem as you, whether I copy the text block and paste back in, duplicate it or just start to edit the text in the block. Screenshot attached. I have this same problem on one specific client's design templates and have done for years. My colleagues do not have this issue.

This annoys the hell out of me, too. I used to enjoy XD but the steer towards 'collaborative' processes and cloud saving means I just don't engage with it as often. They've completely spoilt the experience for me. I want a way of setting "Save As Local Document' as my default, not the Cloud. Stop shoving working solutions down our throats that we don't have a use for. Ironic that Adobe are so focused on promoting collaborative processes yet they have a complete disconnect with their users. And don't keep telling us that this is the way it has been designed now - that's just pure arrogance from a design team that don't listen to criticism from users and can't be bothered to make it work for those that don't embrace your ways of working. In summary - get your head out of the clouds and give us local document saving as a default option. XD is nowhere near as good as it used to be.

Hi Rob Many thanks for that info and breakdown. It's definitely apparent that they've applied customised settings to the text boxes but my issue is that, if I copy/paste one of these boxes to re-use on a current or alternative layer, the settings are lost and that's when I have to use my Text Frame Options workaround. This is what I've found causes it: If I open my client-supplied artwork template and edit the text within boxes, or copy/paste into a layer and edit, everything works fine. If I save/rename the document, close or quit and then reopen to work on it again (which I frequently have to do) and execute the same process, that's when I get the problem with the options resetting. With the exception of the existing template boxes which retain their attributes until you edit them it's like it loses all that information once you copy or duplicate the boxes. I don't understand why it's not retaining any attributes and why I have to customise them just because I'm editing the text or duplicating the item. Is there a setting in my Preferences that needs to be ticked to allow me to honour or retain their assigned attributes? It's seems an overly complicated process. I can't believe that ID would expect me to edit all the sections on first editing of the artwork file to be able to retain those attributes. That simply won't happen in my line of work!

Hi Diane I'm looking into how I might be able to supply a demo file. The problem I have is that it's a one-page template but it has lots of copyright notices and copyrighted icons, logos, etc. on it. I'm emailing the department today to see if they'll allow me to send it.

Hi Diane No, the text boxes are all set up with custom styles, so I shouldn't have to make any adjustments there. Interestingly, when I select an alternative Paragraph Style and then re-select the original style was assigned, the text box baseline shift problem occurs as it does when I'm just changing the text within the box. I can also confirm that the issue is only occuring when I make further changes to the text boxes after I've resaved/renamed the file and closed then re-opened it. If I make the edits when I first open it, they are fine and the baseline stays where it should be; it's only when I close the file and re-open and make further changes (which is always going to be the case) that the baseline changes. The error happens whether the file is an .indd or .idml - I've tried both ways.

Unfortunately, not this particualr suite of templates. I am heavily restricted by NDAs and as an agency I cannot share the templates to third parties. Sorry - I know this doesn't help at all. I can ask the client but I already know what their response will be.

Hi Vladan It's already set to "Do Not Align..." If I switch between the two options to check the settings it resets the text box as per (2) in my screenshot above. With the exception of undoing (command Z) I cannot get it to reset to the original baseline setting - it just resets as per box 2 of my image.

This is what's happening with the file. If I open it and edit the text boxes for the first time, there is no issue with the baseline on the text boxes. If I rename the file, close it and reopen it to edit the text boxes again, that's when I'm finding an issue. See image below - box 1 (left) is the original template layout, box 2 (middle) is when I attempt to edit the text and the baseline shifts, box 3 (right) is when I've applied my workaround, but you can still see a tiny discrepancy on the baseline compared to the box 1.

I've had this issue for ages now and still cannot find a solution that doesn't involve editing the Text Frame Options on every single text box on a page. I am working with supplied artwork templates from a specific client in Germany. Whenever I select the text in a text box to edit it, the baseline shifts downwards, throwing off the templated text. I have researched online and found, by trial and error, the only solution is to customise using Text Frame Options > Baseline Options, then select 'Use Custom Baseline Grid' and set Offset to 'Cap Height'. This re-sets the baseline again but I'm never confident it is exactly the same as the template I have been supplied as I am, essentially, tampering with a client's approved layout. Is there a permanent solution to resolving this? I know this has been an issue going back quite a few versions of InDesign now and each update is supposed to have fixed this issue but it never has (and yes, I've used the old Preferences trash/re-set fob-off a number of times but this doesn't work, either). Will this problem ever be resolved? It's not a good use of time to use the workaround every time I create a new file for this client as there are 20 - 30 text boxes on each artwork, which is a lot of extra unecessary editing that I can't bill onto the client. I need to understand what is happening. Is it not retaining the custom preferences when I try to edit the text? I'm as at a loss as I was with this problem 2-3 years ago.

It's not pasting into TextEdit or Word, either. I'm getting picture/image blocks instead of text or complete blanks when I convert to Plain Text. I had to open InDesign, repaste the entire text from Illustrator into ID, then paste into Word. File Handling & Clipboard SVG-Code option are both unchecked. This is supposed to be a better user experience?

It used to work in Mail by copying/pasting in Rich Text and it would import in with the same font & size settings as Illustrator and simply using the keyboard command would switch to Plain Text so that all font/size were consistent. Now it seems that I have to keep my default on Plain Text (causing problems with custom signatures I use) and switch to Rich Text once pasted, which is the exact opposite to how I use to operate my workflow until a few weeks ago. Again, InDesign seems to be ok but something has now changed with Illustrator. Hmmm....

Thanks for the information. That appears to work but it only works if Preferences>Composing is set to Plain Text as default - you can't convert individual files from Rich Text to Plain Text when you are already working in a Rich Text mail draft, which is the way I used to be able to work. Strange that you can still work in this way using InDesign. Something has definitely changed but at least I can still copy/paste from Illustrator. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm trying to select a paragraph of text from my Illustrator artwork and paste it into Apple Mail so that a client can review it to make sure it reads correctly, as I have been doing in my workflow for the last 15+ years. When I paste it into Mail it appears as though it's coming in as an image rather than editable text (as it used to), so I'm assuming it's pasting as SVG or PDF? I've now switched those options off in Preferences>File Handling as the workaround on this thread suggests but it's still pasting as an image and not text that the client can adjust and mail back to me if it's incorrect. Something has changed, so it's not as if I'm expecting it to do anything different to what I am used to and what the application did before. What's changed?

This workaround has not worked for me. I am having to copy from Illustrator and paste into InDesign, then copy from InDesign and paste into Mail. Why is this copy/paste problem still an issue when the problem was posted over a year ago? This appears to have been an issue for me since the last CC update. Why are there always, always problems with CC updates? I'm paying my subscription for you to add to my user experience, not break the things that are already there.

Thank you. I've just noticed that CC desktop has changed the way it delivers the app updates and preferences to you, which could explain why it defaulted (to the Adobe preferred option, of course). The newly designed layout of the pop-up window instead of the drop-down menu is predictably obtrusive.

I'm am completely fed up with Adobe forcing me to cloud sync my files/libraries every time I install a software update on my machine. How do I switch it off and why does it always reactivate when I install an app update? I wish you would stop pushing processes to me that I do not use in my workflow.

What do the more experienced contributors on this thread suggest as best practice in this scenario? I receive Illustrator and Photoshop files from clients in America and Japan using embedded U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 and Japan 2001 Coated, respectively. I have to reformat these files for use in 3 individual client-supplied templates which ultimately involves exporting to print in the following - PDF/X-3:2002 and 2 separate custom Output Intent profiles using PSO Coated v3 as the basis (with edited settings) and (what has been called) CRPC6_GRACol2013_TC1617_MSv4.icc If I do not convert all files to CMYK or mistakenly leave a specific profile in a linked asset in the composited InDesign template, one or more of the clients' print suppliers rejects the files. My current workaround is to remove all profiles from every element when compiling my artwork and use the specified settings per client in InDesign when exporting to PDF. This is the only way I can get the files approved. Shouldn't my chosen setting assist me in converting any RGB or embedded profiles to the required colour output without me having to change the linked assets? Interested to know if anyone has an alternative solution. Thanks.

I finally have some stability across the suite using different versions of each software. CC is telling me I have 7 updates available and, supposedly, some are stability-related fixes, but I have no faith in Adobe's competence to improve what I'm already struggling with. I wish Adobe would stop shoving cloud-based collaboration and file sharing down our throats (which I'm positive contributes to the sluggishness of my machine) and sort their apps out. I'd rather have speed and efficiency in my workflow than extra tools, tricks and panels every time there's an upgrade.

Thanks for all the info. A lot to read up on over the coming days. Still unsure why it's become such an issue with documents this past year. I've been successfully exporting pdfs for print for about 20 years and it's never been so convoluted.

No, all the documents are unique to the clients and are treated as separate projects. I sometimes find that I get a dialogue warning box telling me there are different colour profiles assigned when opening different documents and it becomes confusing and frustrating. A couple of years ago we would never encounter these issues so I can't see where I can create a consistency across the studio's workflow now. I juggling Japanese, American, European and individual corporate client profiles. It seems they're all creating different profiles and job options we have to use.

Hi Rob I appreciate the knowledge you're imparting here. Don't know if you can help with my quandary. I have an issue where I have 3 separate clients all using different custom PDF export settings and icc profiles. One has recently updated their settings (which I've added to job options) and I now cannot get InDesign to export the file - it simply fails to export. The client has now sent me icc profiles to use which they say will solve the problem but if I use them across my CC suite it will overwrite an existing profile from a previous client which we regularly use. I am frequently switching between projects for all of them and I can't see a way of switching between the icc profiles when in projects. Is that even something I can do? How do I create a consistent workspace for all three clients? Do two of them have to relent and we commit to one workspace? I don't understand why this has become such a major issue over the last year for all of them. If you could give me some insight into how I might be able to solve this that would be very much appreciated as I'd like to respond to the more recent client and be better informed myself. Thanks in advance Eddie
