As you noted, as the STD fonts do not have that character, at best the .notdef character would show up, but it may simply appear blank unless ID will substitute with a font that has that character...in which case whatever is in that spot in the sub'd font has. In the case of the ITC Bookman I used, it is multi-mapped. It has both a $8F control code and $0179, which is a superscript 3 character. So if I just type alt+0179 I get ³. (Which is a different code than the 3 superior used in Bembo.) It's just a right pita. The last time I did this with a non-English book, remapping characters took longer than re-layout. My experience in the same (VP into whatever) using old fonts is there is not enough consistency as to where the characters are located in a given non-Unicode font. I would suggest using a font manager or other system utility to print a character map. You could also just make one yourself using a document with the 255 characters in any font, then switch the paragraph style to the non-Unicode font, print that. You need to check with the print service anything/everything I'll comment on below... 0.25" is a hefty bleed. I would think they would use the standard 0.125" bleed. Your design, if it really bleeds, needs to extend to the bleed guides (this part doesn't need checked...) Re rounded corners. these are die cut. Generally this die is made for standard sizes already and one would generally only add die lines to a non-standard cut. The die, if it is already made (which, if they print cards regularly likely is), then the die will be set already to cut  to the page edges (minus bleed) and includes the rounded corners already--do not design rounded corners. If this print service wants standard trim/cut marks in the PDF, InDesign will do those automatically as long as they are turned on in the PDF export type you are using. Merge fields belong on the regular page. It would help to see a screen shot of both the regular page a master page. I cannot tell from your description if you even need to do a merge. ID's native mail merge has no facility to choose a master page based upon a condition. There is a plug-in that can do this from Em Software (InData, I am using the QXP version below). I use it all the time for merging instead of ID's simplistic merging capabilities. I suspect master page selection could be scripted. But I ain't smart enough. You need only one merge field up in the design. It will replicate along with the other stuff. When you have a field that is duplicated, it will have one set of data in each of those positions. Yeppers. Thanks, Rob. I get the correct readout from everything except ID. Interesting that the PS PDF ends up correct in the resulting PDF. Hadn't tried that. I am interested if Pitstop reads it correctly. What I don't know about Acrobat and its Object Inspector is whether it is reading the metadata of the object in a PDF or whether it is reading the actual image itself. If Pitstop reads it correct, I would reckon it is the latter. Also, I would be remiss if I didn't explicitly point out what should be obvious. That is, there are no issues with such a file in a PDF from ID as regards it imaging properly. Else the forum would have been continuously flooded for a bit and the ID team would have rectified the issue. I cannot remember now how I found out about this. I have this idea that transparency in a PS equates to "truly white" in a JPEG and therefore paper color when a ID file is printed. Is that correct? Not really. White as a color in an image is opaque and will knockout any color below it. If there is no colored elements below it, there is nothing to knockout and therefore only seems to have transparency. It's easy to test. In a new document, draw a rectangle and color it magenta and then import one of these images and size it so part is on the colored rectangle and part of it is off the rectangle. Then export to PDF. The part of the image on top of the rectangle will knockout the magenta and the part of the image off the rectangle will appear to be the same as the background of the PDF, which when viewed in Acrobat is typically just "white." How do you define "truly white" and check for it in a JPEG? Open the image in Photoshop. Move the cursor over a white area. In an RGB image, the readout in the Info panel will be 255,255,255 in a truly white area. If there is a reading other than that, there is color in what appears white. Mike ... View more

CALS tables are easy enough with an XSLT or XSL. Combined with table styles as one runs through the document  (or scripted for applying table styles) it is just a bit of grunt work. I have an XSLT for converting CALS to aid tables somewhere as well. I only have a couple jobs a year using XML any more. The others have all been converted to exporting tagged text. The xml editor I use can simply open an Excel or csv file and convert to XML as well. And there are on-line converters for csv to xml. Without seeing the layout, I dunno whether processing as plain XML is better than as tables or even csv or tagged text. ... View more

As SJRiegal shows in the screen shots and as I mentioned, only one frame for placeholders can be used. the multiple layout controls how they repeat with each new record. So just open the template, open the merge panel and Preview the Multiple Record Layout and you will see all 8 records. Or, merge to a new ID file. You only use a single text frame with one set of merge fields. You cannot have the 8 or whatever text frames all with the same merge fields. You can set it up in the multiple merge panel as to the top and left offset, gutter, etc., and ID will create the remainder of the text frames. You can also use a script called inlinemerge.jsx or something (don't have ID running to look) and you can flow in all 8 into a single frame with two columns, or perhaps each of the 8 individual frames, but the last record have a frame break applied to the style, and the list of options go on. Which option I would choose would depend on the job. Personally, I wouldn't use ID's mail merge. In fact, I rarely have except to help people out on the forum. There are merge plug-ins that do a far better job. But for something as simple as this, I would likely use one of the options I mentioned above if I didn't have Em Software's plug-ins. There will likely be paragraph returns in the larger paragraph field. To see if this is the cause, it is easiest just to open your CSV file in a text editor and it should be obvious if this what is happening--the fields should be like they appear in the CSV, but if there is a paragraph return, the explanatory paragraph where a break occurs will continue at the left edge of the text editor. But for 8 listings? I wouldn't bother with a merge file. Just copy the text for one record and paste it into the text editor, cleanup any needed paragraph breaks, add a hard return or two, do the next record.
