Hello Elephant, I installed the update manually on Win8. Adobe App Manager updated when I first went to use it this morning. AAM now cannot connect to the Internet. Which, as I write this from off on the Internet and it is still giving that message, is not correct. There is at least one person having the same issue I found a thread on and posted there about AAM. For what it is worth, I also cannot obtain updates and get the same "that it cannot connect to adobe. I should check my internet-connection..." message. I recently upgraded my two Adobe applications to CS6 (Illy and ID). Prior to that, the update manager worked with cs5. Tried the solutions at the links. No joy. Geez, W_J_T, cannot you let this go? Many people likely have read enough of the thread to figure out who the characters are. Me? I keep reading this thread like passing a train wreck. I don't know about PM7 as I never upgraded to it. Sometimes all it takes is a little education for the client(s) to accept we might know about file types. Sometimes their requests are valid for where they are located. I get asked for EPS files all the time when it is an Indian client and that is what their service bureau people require. In most any other country, PDFs are the flavor of file to send. It can be a touchy thing, the education of a client. And I usually know before I begin what/how they are going to use a file so there is time to walk them through the how to use what they ought to use. In the case of offices where Word is King, PNG is about the only thing they can reliably use--but then I am also usually the person making their style sheets so it isn't a big deal. Take care, Mike

And for a couple companies I beta test for, we use a simple service, wikisend. Main thing about that service is it is dead simple for the users involved. But there isn't the inbox/outbox structure of either dropbox or yousendit. Then again, someone sending files to you don't need an account, etc. Take care, Mike

Other than actually redrawing it so it *is* vector, JPG cannot have transparency. So if you want transparency in a bitmap format, you need to export to PNG 24-bit format and make sure the transparency checkbox is checked. take care, Mike

Adobe must comply with naming conventions appropriate to the OS it is installed on. As Bob mentions above, the slash (back or forward) has never been viable in a file name on DOS or Windows. For your reading pleasure: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247.aspx#basic_naming_conventions You only need to read through the top portion of that Microsoft article. For Mac it is different through the various iterations of its OS. But in general, the above ought to be observed if there is any chance files will be exchanged with a PC. Take care, Mike

And I would likely do it at 30% of scale. Which would be roughly a 70.85" width. But I would also want to know the nominal viewing distance so I could properly adjust any bitmaps used (if any). So for instance, if the nominal viewing distance was as close as 3', then I would desire the images to be between 640 dpi and 740 dpi. Etc, etc. Even in software that can handle large banners at 50% scale, I usually choose to drop down further. At 10% of scale, and if larger dimensioned images are used, the pixel dimension could be larger than I would be comfortable with in order to achieve an effective DPI I would want. Take care, Mike

You can design a table-based email in ID. Which is what you are going to be sending in CC or any other blast mail interface or software, like the application I mentioned. You can do so with this simple interface, mail it to your self and then off to your list. Your images need to be on your web server already: http://ctrlq.org/html-mail/ If you design and upload your ID blast to your server, you can preflight it here: http://premailer.dialect.ca/ You can even use Google Docs: http://www.labnol.org/internet/send-html-email/19672/ The "worst road to go down" is the static image mentioned above. For a few clients I have used HighImpact to design their templates, turn it over to them for their use. This has worked well and it isn't rocket science. HI is made for this task. But really, if I need a modern car worked on, I take it to a mechanic and so do your bosses most likely. There are good services for you to go online, design the email blasts and use their services for the list management. I just assigned ctrl+shift+7 to the edit mask command for my keyboard shortcuts. If I need to "move" the image inside the mask, that is the keyboard shortcut I press. Does that help you? Really, I usually crop original images in my image editing application. On the slightly rare occassion that I want to place an image and mask it (because I feel a client is going to want the display subject moved a bit), then I simply place the whole image, hit ctrl+7. Then if and when the client wants the subject of the image moved, hitting ctrl+shift+7 makes it fast and painless. Well, painless enough for me anyway. Still, it is a slightly weird way of working with what is inside the mask. Take care, Mike

Hello ramzam, If the JPG file is 23 megs on disk, then uncompressed it is going to be 75 megs or so uncompressed. Still, that doesn't seem too large. Load it into PS or another image editor and save it as a TIFF and then try placing the TIFF. Take care, Mike

Hi Josh--I was out the remainder of the day and evening. I don't know whether you have gotten to the bottom of the problem yet. The PDF seems to just consist of an image. It opens and places fine here in everything I have that can do so. There doesn't seem to be anything extrodinary about the file. It included crop marks, but as far as I can see, there's nothing way out on the artboard, etc., that could indicate there was something weird. If you would like a file, I can ZIP an AI file and the extracted image--which you can also do from Acrobat as well. Take care, Mike

As I don't have an issue with the font in question for the thread within ID--I have a different version anyway--I just loaded a document in PagePlus and a couple other apps. No difference in appearance. But, as it is a different font anyway, it probably doesn't matter. Take care, Mike

The issue is when you have two letters right next to each other, there is no reason that they cannot share the horizontal pixel line. If there is a reason, it should be modified so that what I see on screen represents the file as best as possible. ... ... ...What we are looking for on this thread is suggestions and to find more out about who and why the problem is happening. ... The "suggestions" are what the problems are. The font has bad hinting. You do not have the issue with every font, that is clear. Fonts are little computer applications. Gone are bitmap fonts that had a better correlation on-screen for the OS they were designed for. Instead, modern fonts, even badly designed ones, are little run-time applications. Use a better designed version of Baskerville. It likely will not exhibit the issue for on-screen display--which is what hinting affects. That the font is designed well enough not to exhibit the issue in print says the version you are using is designed well enough for what you are creating. But if the on-screen bugs you enough, try a different version of the font. Take care, Mike

I think the issue would still be one of display if the print is good, regardless of what is producing the display (ID or Acrobat). A good test would be to put the PDF on a computer without your font and view it in Acrobat (assuming the font is embedded of course). What that could tell you is whether it is a more universal issue with the font, or your system. I cannot remember the font, but I had one that on my computer looked like crap both on-screen in PM and in a PDF. Printed great. Looking at that PDF on another persons computer (the service bureau in this case) it looked good. We then threw it on one of the Windows computers and while it didn't look as crispy as the Mac, it was far better than on my computer. Take care, Mike

Not a good reply, but some versions of some fonts just do not display well. I apologize if this is mentioned further up but I was too lazy to reread the thread. Does your page print properly or export to PDF? If so, I would say it is the font itself. If not, then it is an ID issue. Sorry that's the best I have to offer. You are not alone, but usually it is a display issue regarding hinting in the font, or other mysterious font issues. Take care, Mike

I have the Bitstream 1.01 Baskerville BT OpenType version installed. This is at 100% zoom. Personally, I think it is a font display issue as long as it prints fine. Take care, Mike

Your license for Adobe fonts likely precludes alteration. You need to contact Adobe directly. There are circumstances a foundry may allow the alteration on an individual basis. Good luck. I am unfamiliar with the transliteration of Hebrew, so I'll let someone else answer that aspect. I would begin with a Google search though. Mike
