I don't feel like learning more inDesign than I have to as I'm really not a fan of the app and can do almost everything I need to in AI anyway. I can't imagine it would be very difficult to add page numbers to AI as CarlosCanto's​ shown with his short, elegant jsx script. It always strikes me as odd when apps refuse to cater for functionalities that lie within such easy reach, right there in the OS. AI is already keeping track of both the artboard numbers and the layer numbers. AI is great for making PDF documents and saves to PDF formats very well. So it follows that basics like page numbering should be catered for natively and there's an expectation from users for this. I'm impressed by, and grateful to, the AI devs that allowed mathematical operations right there in the dialogues. Awesome work there! There's also a script to add page numbers in AI. Not sure where the current, working version of this is yet but here's one variation from CarlosCanto Introducing: Insert Page Numbers I've used one such script and it was great- adding all page numbers to a layer above the rest. It would be great to have something as fundamentally useful as Artboard numbers available from the default AI build but even CC 2019 has a HUGE snagging list and I doubt numbers will be prioritised. ... Having done some more research now it appears that, if you're just uploading a file as a PDF to ensure the average office worker can view it in browser and print it without problems, it's OK to choose version 10 compatibility on save. Thanks Dov, that's an interesting and valuable response. I've never had an issue where a different variety of Arial caused a layout changes, text reflow or total gibberish but if it's a concern I will be careful to avoid this in future. Sorry Test Screen Name, the last posted image demonstrates that the raster image asset, when viewed in Illustrator without Pixel Preview, is perfectly clear and high-res. This is the same asset that is shown, pixellated beyond recognition, in the first screen grab. ... View more

Thanks for the replies. I'm assuming pixel Preview is supposed be an accurate reflection of how your document would look if view outside of Illustrator (eg- if you exported your PDF to raster). I've had to just throw a lot of vector and raster imagery in to my document as I didn't have time to do much in the way of optimising the assets first. I figured Pixel Preview would be of use to check which assets might look too low res for the set res of the document. Obviously I'm getting a bit confused with this stuff but just FYI my document is A4 at 300 dpi, saved as a PDF which I will then also export as a jpg with 72dpi in the export settings. I'm aware the only way to view a PDF is in something like Chrome, Safari, Acrobat Pro or Reader, etc. Maybe I'm not using Pixel Preview for the right purpose or in the right context? ... View more

Great! Thanks Jane-e and Jacob That tip about tweaking the settings in .ai to avoid using Acrobat for reduction sounds ideal. I'll test it and compare the results between AI and Acrobat "optimised" versions. Those tips (like aligning raster images to whole pixel values at the corners) also sound fascinating. Well, I have a lot of brushes that, back when Brushes could not hold all the settings, etc, I made in to Tools. I never used Brushes, I always used Tools that I'd created from them, leaving the original Brushes as mere "nibs" that were, rarely, still useful in their own right. Now I must Convert all my Tools to Brushes and then begin the lengthy process of checking which of the original Brushes it is safe to delete. I guess there's not easy way to do this, I just wondered if someone had made a tutorial already as I'm sure I'm not the first (possibly the last) person to have to do this. ... View more

I have a similar problem so it seemed like I'd best add it to this (recent) thread rather than start a new one. I'd just like help organising my Tool and Brushes after updating to PS CC2018. I used to create a load of Brushes and then save them as Tools to get all the settings saved. Recent versions of Photoshop allow all those brushes to capture the same settings as available in a Tool so you don't need the Tools anymore (I think that's right). This has left me with a hell of a mess to sort out- a hundred brushes and a hundred, similar, Tools to match! Helpfully we can now convert Tools to Brushes (yey!), which will make this a little easier at least. Does anyone know of a good workflow, or a video tutorial, that might walk me through the process of reorganising my Tools and Brushes in an efficient and organised manner? Thanks folks. Just posting to report how frustrating this still is, having spent a few hours trying to make a fairly simple action only to find that less than half of the steps actually get recorded (renaming of layers ignored, creation of patterns ignored, etc). It's great that some remarkable things can be achieved with AI's existing Action functionality. Yey. In my opinion though there are just too many flaws in Action recording to make it reliable so I resist resorting to it now. It's just not professionally implemented functionality, like they just launched it at beta! BTW: I'll not be filing yet another bug report or feature request this morning as I'm certain that Adobe are well aware already. It's just their unwillingness to devote the necessary resources to improve these basic aspects of AI that prevents progress. ... View more
