You can make a copy of an object you are working that has many anchor points. Then take the look-alike above the original and make it transparent so that you can see what you're doing. Now, you can reduce those anchor points and reshape that look-alike object above. Once done, you can hide the original or delete it. You now have a reduced anchor point object without the distortions.
This is what I do with out loosing the original quality of my drawings.
