I tried using Save As and changing the file name and it still gained another 2 MB. I'm saving a form made by a company I work for, so I don't have permission to Optimize. Do you have any idea why and what it adds to the file even when I add nothing? Thanks!

That is so frustrating. The only thing I can tell you is, when you have recreate lost work, it always goes a lot faster the second time. You'll be surprised how much of your work time was problem solving and that you've already worked out, so you can sail right through it. Just roll with it and learn from it. If you're looking for a competitive software, a lot of people like Inkscape. I've never tried it, but I hear good things.

Hi Mylenium! Thank you for your reply. I'm finding that the error is only happening on comps in which I've reimported pre-rendered Quicktime Animation MOVs, in case that's a clue as to what the specific problem is. I don't see "Check for issues" in the System Control Panel. Where can I find it? Thanks!

I'm running the latest AE on Windows 11, and now I cannot output anything. First I started getting "Error 10::48, Unimplemented Function" while trying to play the timeline, and now when I try to output, I'm getting Error 20, which just says an unexpected error occured while exporting, please restart AE and try again. So I've done that, but still the same errors. Between the time that it was working and now, I have made no changes to the system or any settings. Does anyone any idea what might wrong or have any suggestions? Thank you!

Fixed! It's saving my User Presets now! The problem was the permissions for the folder you mentioned. I found this video that explains how to take ownership from the System and that did the trick. Awesome, thanks for filing the request, EckiAME. The media browser is a bit cumbersome without that feature for me, which is why I never use it. I just drag from Explorer, but it would be nice to have a panel right there in the app.

When I export MP4 from AME, it will not play in Media Player, but will play in MPC-HC. I looked up a "fix" for this, and it says to use hardware accellerated encoding. Well, the preset settings show Progressive checked but grayed out, and if I try to change the Encoding Settings from Software to Hardware encoding, I get an error message "Your system's hardware does not support hardware accellerated encoding for the current settings." I'm following the same workflow that has always worked before, which is rendering to Quicktime Animation compression and compressing to MP4 in AME. I'm on the latest version of AME on a new computer with i9-14900K and RTX 4080 Super GPU. I just updated the driver to see if that would fix it, but it didn't. I tried disabling the checkbox shown disabled in the Preferences Media tab to see if that would turn off Hardward Encoding and fix the problem, but it had no effect. It's not that I particularly need it play in Media Encoder, but that does tell me something is wrong with it. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks!

It goes to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Adobe\After Effects 2024\User Presets, and it's empty. However, when I open that location manually, I don't see any such folder. So it must be a shortcut? Public Documents has an Adobe folder in it with a User Presets folder. So there's that mystery solved. Thank you for pointing this out, because that does help make some sense out it. 😉 But I wonder why on launch, AE doesn't know where to look.

Thanks, Airweb, I considered that, but now it's changed again. After running AE as Administrator then quitting, it's back to launching again normally, except that it's gone back to giving the same error message it has since I first installed AE on this new computer. Below is the error message. The directory it's looking for doesn't exist on Windows 11. It's now called Public Documents, so I don't know if this is a problem AE has on Windows 11 overall. I don't know what I can do to get rid of this error message now. I don't why AE thinks it needs this folder it's looking for. I looked through the Preferences to see if that folder is indicated anywhere and it isn't. Why would it think it needs to use a shared Documents folder? I never had any issues like this on Windows 10.

I found I can use AE if I launch as Administrator, so at least I have a work-around but not a solution. Fixing the permissions might solve this error, but I don't know what folder to fix the permissions on. I located the Preferences files by using the link button in the Preferences Startup and Repair tab, but it was set to Full Control already. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

I'm running Windows 11 Pro, Intel i9-14900K, 96 GB RAM, Nvidia RTX 4080 Super GPU. AE was working as it should this morning, but now I'm getting the following errors messages when I try to launch it. I already tried uninstalling AE, then cleaned the registry, rebooted and then reinstalled AE, but still the same. Just before this problem started, I tried to install the VanceAI Desktop App and had installation problem with it. Does anyone know what the CEP suite is or how I can fix this? Thank you!

pixxxelschubser, once the layers are selected, it's possible to drag the whole kit-n-kaboodle to anywhere in the Layers panel all at once, rather than having to click-click-click a hundred layers that don't happen to be arranged next to each other in the list but should be. I often want them sorted according to their locations on the artboard, so that's why selecting from there would be ideal. That way they come into AE in a logical order for animation. That's the only reason, I just want a faster, easier way to sort the Layers panel. Maybe some day! 😉 For now I'll click-click-click... its' not that bad.

Yes, that's it. I often have files with many many layers that I need to organize in certain ways to make them easier to animate in After Effects. I didn't think it was possible but asked because sometimes I find that at some point a feature was added that could make my work easier, so it never hurts to ask.

Here's a simple file to demonstrate what I mean. The first image shows the result of box-selecting multiple items on the artboard. As you can see, many objects, but only one layer, can be selected this way. The second image shows what I was hoping could be accomplished with a command or script: All layers with selected objected are highlighted. This has to be done manually, click by click, in the Layers panel, as far as i know. Which is what I did to accomplish the task, but if there's a script or something, it would be handy for next time.

The best way to show you is if you try it yourself. Make a file with many layers and an object on each layer. Then box-select a group of objects on the artboard and look at the layers palette. You'll see only one layer highlighted, but many objects on the different layers are selected. I was asking if there's a shortcut to selecting (highlighting) all those layers that have selected objects. I'm fairly sure there's no way to do this, but I was asking in case there was a way I didn't know about. I used a work-around, manually selecting and sorting the layers into the groupings I wanted, so I'm good now. 😉

No, that's not it, but thank you. I'm just looking to sort layers while keeping the objects on the layers they're already on. Just to drag layers up and down the Layers panel to sort them, not to drag objects between layers.

I did it using the little selected object indicator boxes in the Layers panel to help me know what layers to grab, but I wish there was a feature to select layers from the artboard. What a time saver it would be.

I have a file with a gazzillion layers, and I'd like to arrange the layers in a logical fashion to bring into After Effects to animate. Specifically, I want to sort the layers according to the location of it's contents on the canvas, with all layers containing objects toward the bottom of the canvas arranged toward the bottom of the layers list. Ideally, I would like to be able to box-select the bottom fifth of the canvas to select all the layers to drag them down the list, but of course this only selects the objects on the layers and not the layers themselves. Is there any way to convert a selection of objects into a selection of their layers? Thanks! Update - This time when I selected the layers with the little boxes, it didn't deselect the objects, so at least I can use this information to help me know the right layers to select. But I'll leave the question open in case there's a better way. Thanks!

I have a 2-stop linear gradient I created by starting with the same color on each stop. Then I opened one stop to see the color in the picker, and without changing hue, pulled the color to the lower right a bit, thus decreasing value and increasing saturation. The picker clearly shows an clean, even gradient between the two color points, with no gray in between (none necessary to calculate the gradient), yet Illustrator puts a band of gray in the middle of the transition. Does anyone know a work around for this bug, short of choosing another color? Thanks!
