I've been using the gradient feature of Illustrator quite a bit but I've never figured how to get back to solid colors the proper way. After I'm done, everything I want to color wants to be a gradient. What is the correct way to change from gradient to solid color? Windows 7 Adobe CC2017 Thanks

I did this tonight. I see that you can't vary away from the original ellipse tool if you are using a stroke. I used "liquefy" on the neck of the duck and you see what it did to the lines.

Thank you, I will check out this thing about the preferences. The heart was done with the regular ellipse tool. Last night I discovered some jaggies on a circle that I was making. It looked terrible but when I zoomed in to it, the jaggies went away. I am going to experiment one more time and see what happens. BTW the Image Interpolation was set to bicubic automatic when I looked.

Anti alias stays on almost all of the time. I did some experimenting and found that just some of the images are getting jaggies, and some are okay. Sometimes it's so bad I'd rather just duplicate and make the lower layer a bit larger for my outline. Since only some of the images are doing this, I believe it may be the artist (Meaning me. ) is not drawing a smooth line. This is the only example I can find tonight, but if I run into it again I will come back and re post. This is the kind of stroke I am talking about. The one in the layer styles.

Why didn't I think of that? John, your suggestion to close and re-launch Illustrator worked. The "ghost box" was gone when I re-opened. If this is a bug, I wish they would fix it. I am using CC 2015.3 on Windows 7. Thanks!

I've never had this happen before in any software! I have an empty bounding box on my screen that attaches itself to any object/layer I choose. It won't delete and it doesn't show up on the layers panel. It's just there and it's stuck. I can't go any further because it groups itself to any layer I want to work with. Strangest thing I've even seen. Like a ghost! BTW It doesn't show up on a screen shot so I can't show you. Can you help?

Okay, I've been playing around with it and have come up this. Grouped like this, it looks fine. In other words, I did it but don't have a clue how I did it. Anyway, here's how the layers look now and after grouping it looks right. Did you option click on a new layer icon possibly?That also makes sublayers, which are annoying in Illustrator? I add new layers a lot because I am used to using Photoshop. Are you saying I don't need to make a new layer when I draw a new image? Thanks

Hi, I am using Illustrator CC 2015 and have a problem grouping layers and having the result come out right. Usually, I am able to arrange my layers so that the group looks like it should but I'm having problems with this one. Every time I group this one, the dark layer comes out on top. This is a paw. The dark shadow layer (2nd layer) looks like it is the second layer but it is apparently not. Can you tell me what is wrong with my layers? And how to correct it? Maybe I can learn some kind of "rule of thumb" from your answer, is there is one. Another quick one: How is it that the layers sometimes group without my doing it? I made a few line profiles but no matter how I try to make a round end, I get a blunt end. Is there a way to make them look like the ones I draw? I tried expanding appearances and then they were useless.

I would love to do that but when I try, my "add to profiles" s grayed out. Also, can I make a new profile by using a shape? Thank you. Oh, wait a minute, when I use the width tool on the left side bar, it Does become active! (duh, that's what you said to do) I will play around with this now and see what I can make. Thanks again.

I forgot to say, the images that were not showing up when I tried to save a pattern were scatter brushes. Maybe that was why they disappeared?? Can the brushes be changed the to an object?

It wasn't in the pattern swatch list, but it was saved in the file folder. But the trouble was, it saved a copy without all the tiny images I had painstakingly put on it. So I have to start over anyway and try to get those images to stay on. I found some good videos for this so I'm going to get this right! Thanks

This is very valuable info. I will try again. When I tried to save it lots of my small images disappeared and it wouldn't save with them on the art board. Also, I think I made my image too big, since it is supposed to be tiles afterwards. Any idea why a lot of my little graphics wouldn't save? Mostly snowflakes, etc. Thanks.

I saw some old post about certain tools getting stuck in Illustrator. Mine gets stuck on the pencil tool. Seems nothing I do will release it from the pencil. I have done nothing different and I still use Windows 7. Can anybody help? I hate to have to save/close and re-open.

Thank you. I find it hard to navigate in the appearance palette flyout. I did manage to add a few graphic styles but some of them are .eps files and do not work. The .ai files work fine. So what are the .eps files and when are they used? Also is there a way to convert my own files to an .ai file and use my own fills?
