Hi Ira, Yes, InDesign is the forward evolution of PageMaker.  You want to reprint, so... Do you have the original PM files? They can be opened by those of us who have preserved an old install of PM6/7. This would get you into a new InDesign file for further editing. Do you only have the PDF of the book? That can be opened in Acrobat Pro and the full text can be exported to a Word docx, which can be File > Place back into a new InDesign document. Are there pixel-based pictures in the old book? If a PDF document exists, you can export them out all at once to an image assets folder and then File > Place the images into a new InDesign document. If neither PM nor PDF exist anymore, then, yes, you can scan the pages and let Acrobat Pro optical-character-recognition the text and also export the text out to a Word docx again (for rebuilding into a new InDesign file). Yes, that will be time-consuming. One last thought: make sure those pages are scanned perfectly flat. Acrobat does a bad job of OCR-ing scanned pages that show curvature in 3 dimensions. ... Hi Production, Well, actually, step 1 is unnecessary. In step 2, you can File > Place either an RTF or a DOC or a DOCX file. The text and hyperlinks might already be formatted into a table, or it might not be. Just be sure to turn on Show Import Options as you place it. To look good on a smartphone screen means usually making a EPUB. A step lower would be a PDF.  But 1500+ pages inside of 3 days? That is highly unreasonable. But you could design the Table of Contents pages in InDesign; export to PDF; then combine the 2 PDFs together, and then build some Bookmarks from the front ToC pages to the major articles.  A 1500 page anything is going to be an unwieldy large document to put on a smartphone.  Why not tell them no? ... Bonjour Mackloug, Why not make Parent Page "German" with a textframe on the left page. Also, make a Parent Page "French", with a textframe on the right page? Apply these to left and right hand spreads consistently through your pages.   Also, be sure to make a set of paragraph styles that are set to French for the French content; and German for the German text content. Hi Rachel, Exporting a PDF and opening in Acrobat Pro and exporting to a Word.docx should work well.  Did you try simple things to get around the crashing? Only Acrobat Pro running while you do this? Do you have enough system RAM (preferring at least 16gb RAM)? If Windows, have you emptied out the two different Temp folders and restarted and then tried to export the text from the PDF from Acrobat Pro?   Here is another idea: use a built-in script. Scripts panel > Application > Samples > JavaScript > Export All Stories.jsx. EPUB can support ruled borders, but might also depend on the epub reader software. Did you try dragging the mouse (with the Type tool active) through the text? 1 click inserts in text; 2 clicks selects a word; 3 clicks selects a line of text; 4 clicks selects a whole paragraph; 5 clicks selects all the paragraphs. Generally, you would adjust the frame edges (blue) to match the (pink and purple) margins and columns guides. Some use the Adjust Layout feature to resize the margins which automatically resizes the text frames to match. Hi N, This is an example of something being so logical so as to lack a human expectation.   The under-trained human user has a hard time appreciating that he/she should should not also select the pilcrow if you want to paste into the same styled hard return.
