Thanks, JJMack. I need to learn more about transitions, although I'm not sure that's what I need in this case. I'd like an animated layer to slow down as it comes to a stop. It isn't a transition between clips, unless I misunderstand how to use it.

Sure, you can convert AI files to PNG, but you'll need AI, PS or some other program to make the conversion. If you are unfamiliar with them there will be a learning curve.

What I heard on the video is that I cannot run more than one version of AI from CC. When I upgrade it sounds like I'll lose the ability to work in an earlier version from CC. Am I wrong? I am currently paying for CC even though I am not able to use AICS6 in my workflow because of bugs. It is over one year and nothing has changed. According to the "Myth" video I will be force to "upgrade" to the latest version after one year, whether the bugs are fixed or not.

Interesting solution, Mike, although I would nice to keep it live. Perhaps using a random setting on a scatter brush would achieve a similar result, and maintain a live effect.

And, just in case you're not aware, you can transform the fill independant of the object, by hold "~" key (US keyboards), while using rotate, scale, shear, or other tranform tool.

Sure. It's been several years since I used that tool. It simply converted the Excel text file to an XML file compatible with AI. Glad you found a solution. There seems to be very little documentation on that portion of AI. FWIW… Here are a few samples of variable graphics I did, using AI and PSD several years ago. The skater card was done exclusively in AI and could not have been accomplished using InDesign data merge.

If my memory serves me right, you can drag an Excel file onto the script and it will generate an AI-compatible XML file of the Excel text file. Hmm… after opening the zip file, it may be a PowerPC application. Sorry, it won't work on newer Macs.

Well, yes, I use that every day. I wonder why that only works with calligraphic and bristle brushes. Why not other brushes, such as art brushes? I don't understand the difference or the limitation.

Thanks for correcting me. You're right, I'm thinking of Photoshop brushes. So, is there a hotkey to focus on the stroke width field? Otherwise, I see no advantage in the workaround.

Is this feature STILL not built into AI CS6? Photoshop has had a simple keyboard shortcut for changing brush/stroke width for YEARS. Don't these software teams talk to each other? I'd also like to see the "scrub" feature Photoshop has, for changing numeric settings. Dragging across the "name" of the option, adjusts up or down. Why this is not in AI, I have no idea.

I realize this is very old post, but I just had the same problem. I had installed a new, Intous 5 tablet. I noticed some of my AI brushes did not have Pressure option, other were set to pressure, but if I swtiched to "Random" pressure became grayed out. Reinstalling the SAME driver version fixed the problem. Weird!

Yeah, Mordy. If you have any clout with Adobe, see if they can fix AICS 6 so I can use it on a daily basis. I bought into "Adobe Creative Cloud" and lucky for me, I already had version CS5, or my work would be grossly impaired. I cannot drag global colors on gradient sliders. Without that feature, editing gradients is at least 3 times the work and I do that constantly in my workflow. It's things like this that cause me to wonder which direction AI is headed. I'm very disappointed and feel I have wasted my money on "Creative Cloud".

I have not sense that Illustrator is listening to my requests. There is plenty of room for productivity improvements in AI, I've stated them numerous times, with no change. New features are nice, but when an old feature breaks, with a new release, I'm stuck in the old version. Example: Editing gradients that use global colors is broken in AICS6. I can no longer drag-n-drop a global color onto a slider, to update the gradient. This is a critical production workflow for me, that cancels my migration to CS6. When will this be fixed? Gradient blend editing, in general, should be improved: Allow multiple slider selection, so section of a gradient can be moved in one step. Fix the "sticky" slider bug that wrecks havok when trying to move sliders (I'm sure I'm not alone). Provide a button to "Simplify" blend, that will delete multiple sliders at once. I'm sure there are more great ideas for improving gradient editing.

I know, there isn't one, but why not? There's a gaussian and radial blur. What's so different about a motion blur? I can create a sudo-motion blur by grouping several objects and moving one object off the page, then moving the center of the radial blur to that side, in the radial blur dialog. It would be much easier with a motion blur effect. Another workaround is to blend 2 objects of different transparencies, but I can't save it as a graphic style. Transform would work, if transparency of "duplicate" objects could be altered. I don't see a way to do that either. If anyone has some creative solutions for motion blur effect, THAT CAN BE SAVED AS A GRAPHIC STYLE, I'd like to hear about them. Thanks, Ray

If you have access to InDesign, you might find it's Data Merge feature much easier to use. Just place your AI graphic in InDesign and setup a variable based on a spreadsheet.

Turn on Show Grid to understand what it does. It effectively rotates the rectangular page grid. So everything you draw is rotated. For example, setting Constrain Angle to 30 degrees wil cause ellipses, rectangles, etc., to be rotated 30 degrees when you draw them, even without holding Shift. JET, Thanks for this explaination. I've been confusing "General/Constrain angle" and "Smart Guides/Construction Guides Angles". Showing the Grid really helps. SmartGuides, though, still confuse me. I don't consistantly get the angle guides to appear when I drag an object. It would be helpful if they were constrained by holding shift.
