I've been fairly successful looping through an AI file, and was able to loop through layers and pull text Layers, to a specified layer. Problem being, that I also want to capture anything that's nested in groups, and depending on which way I put the try statements, it will only catch parts of the editorial in my file. Thanks! I'm just working with Tifs, but I mentioned pdf, cause there's code on the save side to convert bit depth. As per usual, I probably had my syntax wrong, but his is exactly the method I was looking for! Thanks!

It seems there are PDF/BITMAP specific methods to convert to 8 bit depth, but I can't find any documentation to do this easily to the file as a whole. Is there a way to do this? I want to convert from 32 to 16 bit.

As is, this script still shows /usr as the path. To get to what would be the hard drive its: var user = new Folder('~/') alert(user.parent.parent.parent.parent.fsName) But this errors out, as there's no data beyond this. Tried it also without fsName, and it just returns null. Good thought though!

I'm running: alert(Folder.desktop.fsName) Which brings up: /usr/home/<<userName>>/Desktop I need it to bring up: <<hardDriveName>>/usr/home/<<userName>>/Desktop Ex. Macintosh HD/usr/home/tferguson/Desktop Is this possible with Javascript/Extendscript?

Has anyone had success using more advanced pieces of regex to properly rename strings? I want to Capitalize the 3rd back reference in a file name, and although I believe I'm following the proper way of doing so via Replacement Text Case Conversion, Bridge is just giving me a capital U instead. Please see what I am doing below. Additionally, does anyone know what flavor regex Bridge uses? Thanks!

I've got a lot of actions to create symbols. I'm hoping to feed variables into their names. I can figure something out with renaming an existing. Terrible that Adobe won't release important info regarding these, there's gotta be a way to suppress dialogs from these things, or emulate a return key press to the dialog?

This is brilliant Carlos! The fact that I can add logic to things will speed up my process immensely. With actions, I had to add guides in order to make sure the script didn't get an error, which in llly actions is a good 3 or 4 steps. Thanks again!

In a nutshell, I want to run clean up, but recording it to an action still makes me confirm it. This is a pain on batch items. I'm looking/creating a script that does the same thing as cleanup, but figured I'd ask if one can utilize program functionality with any sort of scripting.

Good luck! The issue with mine, was that I was moving layers based on their zOrder, which changed everytime I pulled a layer out, looping backward allowed me to be sure I wasn't trying to find a non existent layer.

Thanks! That makes sense! Now I'd like to put a layer with sublayers into a symbol to maintain any effects that are on the sub layers. I have an action that runs, that does this with nested layers like this. I used to just let it group everything, but then found some effects were falling off. I tried the below, but it didn't work, and states that it's an illegal argument. Any fix for this? I ran into this error tonight, and found your post. My script is really simple and I'm using it to collect layers into a layer named "Collected", if there are more than 2 layers. I even tried the suggested fix in this readme: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/pdf/illustrator/scripting/Readme.txt. But I'm getting an error simply when referencing a the current executing layer. I tried referencing the current layer in the loop directly, but it still causes issues. I've got the below script, but it's not working. I'm trying to select all the art in the document on different layers, and create a symbol. So far I have the first part down, but can't figure out how to reference what is selected. actDoc.selection comes out as undefined. I've also tried to use "actDoc.PageItem.selected = true" and a few other variants, but I'm coming up empty. Ahhhh... thanks for all this help! Makes sense about DELTA_H, I should probably do a deep dive on javascript syntax, it gets to me since everything can be separated by ".", but can be set variables or existing parts of the object. I guess they're somewhat the same, but it's helpful to learn the distinction between all. And more importantly, I need to learn the words to describe all these items, because I sound like an idiot. I tested the script on my mac after I mentioned the window not showing up properly, and it turns out it is just a problem with this crappy programming PC I'm on. No big deal on the transparent part, but out of curiosity, there's no other way to have an image show up, except in the window, correct? Additionally, your script is helping me achieve another feature, which is playing a sound at the end of my script. Although I've reached out and there were examples of how to play using media player, I was successfully able to embed a sound in a swf, and it executes just as I would like, by adding: win.preview = win.add ('flashplayer',undefined,'~/Desktop/test.swf'); Although, I tried to do a relative path from the script to the sound in the 3rd parameter and was unsuccessful. Is there a simple way of doing this? Or would I have to have a script look up the location of the script I'm running, and then add the "relative" path to this? Thanks again!

Awesome! This is definitely more of the idea, although it opens up windows media player, to play. It would be used in a batch, so I wouldn't necessarily want to have to open a program every time, but it does make sense as I'm unaware if there's a default background player for PC and mac. Otherwise I did find documentation on flash, and in using Window, and adding flash player to it, I'm able to get the desired sound to play. However I tried using a relative path from the script to the swf, and it came back with an error. I had to place the swf on my desktop to test correctly. I was able to boil your script down, to what I need. Works great in extendscript, but for some reason, only shows a portion of the image in photoshop and illustrator. This was happening even before i boiled it down. Thoughts? The last thing I'm trying to do with it, is figure out if I can set a transparent background for the window. I also tried using backgroundColor, but was unable to set the attribute correctly... there is a lot to learn with Adobe scripting. I also couldn't find reference to what DELTA_H is, I have a bunch of their PDFs, and googled, but couldn't find reference to this. I'm trying to be resourceful so I don't have to ask such remedial questions. I'm looking to build a loader image, that opens up at the start of my script, and automatically closes after a few seconds. I opened up the image processor script to see how Adobe has added images to alerts, but it's an extensive doc, and I couldn't tell where the image was being pulled from, as the variable only shows up twice, and is only called, and not set. Also is there another method other than alert to call a box like this? I would prefer it have no buttons.

I revised this loop someone had created and it works perfectly function dump(obj) { var out = '\n\n//Begin Dump \n'; for (var i in obj) { out += i + ": " + obj + "\n"; } $.write(out) } This has already helped me identify parts of the object without having to google. Only downside is, I don't think I understand the structure of layers enough to get it to work on every case: Example that breaks altogether:: dump(activeDocument.activeLayer)

That's what I was hoping for! I guess what I'm looking for is similar to var_dump in php. But I've googled it, and it seems my assumption was correct and the best way to do that is through a for loop.
