The item you have selected shows in your Layers panel as a linked file. The first thing to do would be to embed it: You should find an Embed button in the Control panel or the Properties panel. Once you've done that, the Layers panel should tell you whether you have editable Illustrator paths or a raster image. If the former, you should be able to edit shapes and colors as if you had created them; if the latter, you'll need to do an Image Trace or recreate the paths with Illustrator drawing tools. Peter

My guess is that you have accidentally pressed shift + cmd/ctrl + B, which hides the bounding box. Press that combination again (or go to View menu > Show Bounding Box) to reactivate. Peter

Hi, Larry. As far as I can see, caps lock only toggles precise cursors but has no effect on Shape Builder behavior. I suspect this may require a preferences reset, though something less drastic would be more palatable. Peter

You're welcome. Bring to Front will move a selected object to the front of the layer, but won't move a layer to the front of the layer stack. I've been known to get frustrated by that behavior, until I remember.

Interestingly, I was able to reproduce this in one document but failed when I tried it in a second. So it does happen, without any excess objects, but I haven't yet worked out what variables are in play.
