Just a note that not using folders would be untennable for a working photographer with catalogs regularly containing 100K+ images spanning years. Could you? Yes. Would it be efficient - decidedly not. Just not sure "better yet" is helpful framing for someone trying to figure this issue out. Even for someone with a personal catalog, unless you have a photographic memory of your keywords, it seems like a great way to make things hard to find - esp if you ever lost your metadata.

USe case: I have to stop motion animations to edit, each about 450 images. Occasionally, with the camera mounted high above on a crossbar, it interprets the orientation wrong and I rotate the images back to landscape. Fast forward to editing and wanting to apply a linear exposure gradient on all 450 images. Result: Total junk show. MASSIVE waste of time for a professional workflow. Why can't the application of masks simply be independent of historic metadata? If I copy and paste a vertical gradient from the left, it should remain a vertical gradient on the left when syncing masks, otherwise it is not syncing at all. Now back to my massive waste of time. Something that shoudl take less than a minute in now taking hours.

@RickK Like What, Rikk? We're importing and it'd rendering duplicates!?!? Tell me what "steps" you need and I'll gladly supply them. Plug in card - open LRC - click "import" - Select card as source - see settings in screenshot - click "Import". Seems pretty straightforward. Camera is a D850 but clearly it's happening across camera brands. MAC OS Big Sur 11.2.3 LRC 10.2 This started with the 10.2 update I believe. ALSO NOTE: I have "rename files" checked here but normally don't. Unfortunately, when it's checked, the files got names squentially, so it's even harder to extract the dupes to delete them. Otherwise, they all have a "-2" as others have founds, and they can easily be deleted by do a catalog search for "-2", marking them for deletion and then deleting from disk.

Also - I noticed it takes FOREVER to import images now - many hours for what used to take 30 min.

I've been using LR for even longer and with the last three generations of Nikon DSLR's, I've had FAR greater function of the Shadow slider. And AGAIN Per - This is NOT about that purposefully underexposed image. I don't need help with photo basics, but thanks for your time.

yes - work arounds exist - but they are all multiple steps where there used to be just one (or tweo, if I pulled blacks back down a bit). Is that a good thing? Again, pls don't get hung up on the underexposed image - this applies for all files. I typically only pull shadows by maybe 10 or so, but now that is not even registering on most images - esp. ones that are properly exposed!

yes - so why? LR used to be able to have a huge effect (like the Capture One example I posted) on shadows of even poorly exposed shots. This is a significant change. I typically shoot tethered in Capture One on location (becuase LR used to be horrible at this) and bring them home, into an Adobe workflow. I've done this for YEARS at a professional level and suddenly there is this massive loss of fidelity where there had been parity. It seems like I'm just tossing out valuable information in in these files in LR. It's quite confusing (and disappointing!)

...and thank you all for taking the time to download and play with the file. Saints, all of you. Note: the file is just a cull from a recent shoot. It is not a file I like/want/need/am trying to save. It is just an example file to play with. Please don;t waste your valuable time tryting to make it look good! I'm just concerend about how my shadow slider went from incredibly effective to nearly non-existent. Thanks!

I'd be curious what results you had with JUST moving the shadow slider.

And if it *doesn't*, as it sounds lilke you expereinced, what's up with that?!? LOL It seems like every D850 shooter in the world would be screaming. Maybe I just suddenly and inexplicably need to adjust my workflow, but it just seems VERY odd to lose that functionality. And yes - that's a crappy, underexposed image included exclusively to make a point.

Yes - tone curve works better, but "What happened to the effectiveness of my shadow slider?" If someone else can *JUST* try to pull shadows and it works better than the screen video file I attached, then where am I to look to resolve it on my end? Hello...Adobe CS??? Do you exist?

Yeah - thanks. I included an underexposed image to make the point. I'm still searchng for the answer to the question "What happened to the effectiveness of my shadow slider". I'm not trying to save a bad image.

Active D lighting only decreases overall contrast so would theorhetically have the net opposite effect on shadows, but would not explain the loss of shadow recovery to the extent that I am experienceing it (see doppbox link in the thread for screen video grabs of what I'm seeing. (even a Canon shooter would be upset about that loss of shadow recovery LOL 😉 I am a full time professional and have a prettty tight workflow. Nothing on the camera end has changed.

Thanks, but I wish I was doing somerthing that silly! It's definitely deeper than a profile setting (or using the wrong tool!). It happens regarless, and is happening in ACR as well. Have a look at the slider adjustment screen vids in the link I sent - LR vs. Cap. One. It's a STARK difference and the color profile has zero effect on it. All the info is in the file to acheive that dynamic range, LR is jut no longer seeing it for some reason. Appreciate your time to reply!

Here is a link to an underexposed sample file (to highlight the issue), it's XMP, and screen grabs of what I'm seeing in LR vs Capture One. LR USED to be able to achieve the same latitude as Capture One. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5ega5fvgaoxu4s4/AABp1nAY_6S03FpsmeCu89sxa?dl=0

A few months ago, I noticed a sudden loss of my ability to use the shadow slider in any meaningful way. I shoot on a Nikon D850 which has an immense dynamic range, but Lightroom is rendering all my files badly underexposed and, as mentioned, little recourse to correct them. They look absolutely fine in Capture One and I can pull 3-4 stops from the shadows. I'm guessing some default changed, but I'm most concerend about the possible loss of shadow recovery. Anyone know what I should be checking?? Appreciated. LR 9.2 Raw 12.2, Mac OS 10.13.6

In addition to the lag, I'm getting the line between points as well. Anyone else seeing this? I've seen another thread on this but it should be mentioned here as well. So far, trashing my preferences seems to have fixed the lag, but what a hassle...

Same thing here. Mine happens immediately. I get the lag and the lines. I tried resetting to "use the legacy algorithm" for healing brush, but that almost made it worse. Beta testing during my workday is a hassle.

Well, unless I'm doing it wrong (which is possible, but I'm just doing what I've done for years), it still doesn't work. I lost this functionality a while ago though, and just updated this am. Still no worky. I had to make multiple selections, one at a time, on a mask, which is incredibly inefficient for commercial retouching. Hoping it's just me and it miraculously starts working again before my next need.

OK - I am now recently experiencing this. I used to be able to make multiple paths on an image, create a new work path, then simply CMD click on it and make it an active selection. Now they just disappear when I do that and I cannot make them active selections AT ALL. And I'm in the middle of a composite for a client.

How does one kill their old catalog? Do you do that and then just restore from a back-up? Seems weird that this would fix it, but let me know if that's what you're doing. I'm only freezing about 20 times a day, but super-frustrated that I don;t see Adobe chiming in to address what seems to a be a pretty significant issue.
