Thanks Randy. Thats interesting. This bad habit comes from using the book function, where I'm used to InDesign adding blank pages automatically between my chapters - which all start on the right-hand page. Adding blank pages manually worked immediately here.

I meant odd number, not even. There is a new section at the first page and then again at the next one. In the first instance this works as it normally does - the first page in the pdf stands alone. But the next chapter has the same setup - new section for first page and for second page. The effect is different though.

In the attached image you can see the new section/chapter starts on the right side (I set it to start on an equal number). But when I export to pdf the page is moved to the left and the next spread is broken and the left side from that spread moves up beside this page (that is supposed to be right. Usually, my documents are exported as they are shown in InDesign. What could cause this behavior?

Well, any inputs welcome if someone has been in the same situation. I don't think I can make it smaller in the font size.

It looks a bit messy to me, yes. I agree that one chapter per page will be a bad solution. I didn't expect Indesign to have a magic solution, but there could possibly be some tool that would make it easier.

For a while, I haven't been able to set up my TOC well. I have shown it here in 3 images and it doesn't look good because the chapters vary in the number of subheadings. Is there some way to set this up well in Indesign?

When you make these suggestions, is that because of stability/load times? I think these functions will make the product seem more interactive - I guess I don't want the reader to feel like this is simply the pdf but online but an actual interactive book. I have seen one implementation (think it was custom made) where this hover effect worked very well and which also had the ability for users to make notes to certain parts of the text that was then permanently stored for them.

Maybe I should have been more specific. I of course mean to separate it into its chapters and only scroll through each of them. I agree the whole book in one would be a mess. The one big plus with a solution like what I use for the preview is that it's very easy for me. And I'm guessing it will work with a simple interactive pdf with just a few effects like I mentioned previously. The potential minus I guess is that readers could prefer the continuous format.

Hi Jonathan Thanks for the clarification. I have an example on this link where I show the preview of my book: Om bogen – Forlaget De Facto So what I mean is I'm not sure if I should do something like that with just some hover effects and links added, or change it to a continuous text - a bit like long-read newspaper articles where you just scroll all the way.

Thanks, I have downloaded their trial. Do you know if I would be paying only for the period where I am creating/editing the content or if I need an ongoing subscription for as long as the content is up and running?

Thank you! It should be monetized, probably by every student having their own login to the website giving them access to the entire book. Interactivity: I probably only need a hover effect (to have a little pop-up window explain certain words) and the ability to link to other chapters/paragraphs. Devices: I think it should be readable on both laptop and tablet since students will probably use both. It's a bit difficult to judge which solution to go with here

I have a finished textbook ready for print, but I want to create an online/interactive book also. The question for me now is how to go about doing this. Looking through old threads here I didn't find a clear solution. Fundamentally I see two options: 1) keeping the current structure, 2) set up the chapters to be one long text for the reader to scroll through instead of going to the next page. I have a preview for my website made with the flipbook plugin for WordPress and I think that works very well. But that's for a preview. For actual reading, I'm not sure which option would work best. Are there any good - and not too complicated - solutions for turning my book into an online book?

I use one object style throughout my book file for textboxes. In the settings for the object style, I can only find an option to choose one paragraph style - see attached image. When I manually set the first line to a header paragraph style it is reset every time I sync the book file.

My textboxes have a header and then text below. However, in the settings, there is only the option to choose one paragraph style. This works well for the one-paragraph style I choose. When I manually set the first line to use my paragraph style for textbox headers it works only until the next sync of the book. Then all text inside the box will be set to the paragraph style chosen in the settings. Is there some way to fix this? Ideally without having to put together multiple boxes

I tested it out and it works very easily for me. That's a good help! It's a surprising thing though to me that so much can be overwritten but then the "leading" behaves differently. But the case is solved in so far as my practical needs.

I'd like to know also if the spacing after a table can be changed on a case-by-case basis? Again, I usually tweak the pages by changing the spacing through either paragraph spacing or text wrap. But when I select the table I can't see an option to do it that way. These things simply come up for me because I'm going through my book and trying to optimize page breaks etc. so the text looks as smooth as possible.

Thanks again! I had simply overlooked this and had looked at the issue for quite a while. This solves a problem I have many places throughout my book actually. Just as a follow-up: Most places I do want the current space settings, so for cases like these pages where I want to diverge from my default, can I overwrite the style on a case-by-case basis instead of redefining the style generally? Usually, I'm able to do this with for instance increased paragraph spacing, and when I sync the book this overwrite isn't removed. But when I try to just change the leading value here it resets to the paragraph style value immediately. (I realize there's probably a reason why you suggest changing the paragraph style, I'm just curious as to if the leading values behave differently from paragraph spacing in terms of overwrites).

I usually have no problem manipulating the distance before and after paragraphs, but I have attached a page that keeps giving me trouble. What I'm trying to do is to decrease the distance between the points in the numbered list. Usually, I just decrease the space before the paragraph on the space after the paragraph above. But here even when I set every paragraph space setting that I can see to 0, the paragraphs do not move. Is there something I'm missing here? Shouldn't it be possible - and simple - to move these paragraphs closer to each other? (Please note I use grids)

Thanks for the further inputs. I'm not an advanced user and my idea was simply to share a possible solution to a problem I have seen others mention. I did not mean to suggest people should do manual formatting in general but simply to use the [Basic Paragraph Style] for troubleshooting purposes.

I have tested this problem for a while and have found a few things to look at: 1) Put in some text for testing with the [basic paragraph] style. If this text does not work with Balance Ragged Lines: Check if the Composer (in Paragraph panel flyout menu) is set to Adobe Paragraph Composer as “Balance Ragged Lines”. If this text does work with Balance Ragged Lines: Check that the paragraph styles you are using do NOT have justification turned on as this will take precedence over the Balance Ragged Lines function.

The problem is that I think it looks bad to have text that ends early on the page. Are you suggesting that I increase the empty space below/around images? In this case that is not an option. Since there is only text in this spread and the image should be in the first spread.

I'm in the process of adjusting the final layout for my book and in particular, working on page breaks. Since I have quite a lot of images and tables it is (at least for me) much more difficult than working with only text. I'm looking for tips and tools on how to approach this. One example is the attached images which cover 6 pages in the book. In the second picture, the right-hand page stops a bit early. I can't really change the placement of the table because it now lines up with the content of the text. My best idea is to change the line spacing for the spread covering these two pages (left and right). I'm thinking that if it's not very much then the reader won't notice the difference betweens spreads - a difference between a right- and a left-hand page would be much more visible. Any inputs? Other ideas? https://ibb.co/qjgh01z https://ibb.co/WgVdDGR https://ibb.co/tcMt0hq

I went from copying images into the text flow to using text wrap as I read that is the "modern" way of doing things. This gives me trouble though because when I edit my chapters (writing textbook) the images and the text go out of order. A) Is it possible with text wrap to have the image move with the text? (I use "jump object") B) Is text wrap necessarily the right choice for me or might it be just as well to do what I did at first? Sorry for the noobie question but I have read a lot and this is still a problem for me.

Your answer helped me pin it down. Inside my text frame, I have separate frames with quotes. Now I have just placed the Vancouver references in the primary text frame. I'm sure with the Jedi answer that it could be done the other way, but I'll just keep it simple for now.

I have two questions regarding endnotes 1) I have a list of endnotes for each document in my book file. For some documents (chapters) they go out of order. Is there some option to force it to be in the order they appear in the text? 2) I have my endnotes at the end of each chapter because I have read so many threads about the missing features in InDesign for book file endnotes (in a separate document). I was suggested this script, but it is for footnotes and not for endnotes: https://creativepro.com/files/kahrel/indesign/end-of-book_notes.html Is there at this point anything worth trying? I'm really looking to not spend too much time on the references - so I prefer having them at the back of each chapter rather than doing them manually and having them in the back of the book. Thanks in advance!
