Thanks Joe I agree, this would be a simple feature similar to excel whereby the number of highlight "cells" (not rows) appears along the bottom. Im trying to paste a number of cell information into new cells, but i need to count how many i'm cutting, then count how many i'm pasting. I haven't found a successful way to do this in 15 years of using this software. Erics answer goes someway to achieve this but not ideal sean

I understand what you're saying, and your right. I'd like to give the cross-ref a go. How does one "prefix a special maker to a topic name" i tried indexing within the index, but that auto deletes after the next "index generate"

Ok the best i could do withour spending hours trying to figure out something that SHOULD be inately simple for an index is - The script suggested did little other than move text to next line - Using the index style AND Entry spertators was the easiest way to "force line break" and "EM space" to look midly OK pictures attached posting picture intext here for some reason are low quality Would be nice and professional to finish this index with these "see" entries similar to all other entries e.g. Staging of CKD and COPD See Classification of ......................................................455

Hi All
Started to rebuild a new index for the next edtition of a 500 page manual
I used the existing INDEX template and found it difficult and confusing to remove all the redundant markers etc
This worked a treat - cleaned everything with no ghost markers to be found
Step 1.
Open your whole book
click on find/change
under "find what" click on the @symbol
click on markers --> then index marker
leave change to: blank
under search, search "all documents"
Then "change all"
Step 2. (can you believe it?)
remove unused topics
from index menu check reference and book
highlight (click on) any indexed topic
go to top right menu and "remove unused topics"
Tah DAH - all index markers are deleted and your old index is clean ready to rebuild
Whew!! you're welcome
All this SHOULD be an ID single click menu option. WHY?
For all of us who rebuild indexes for the same book/manual/document
requiring all old/dead/deleted (but not deleted) special or hidden characters
but require all styles and indexing setup to remain intact

Hi All Have a 500 page book with many cross references and indexed items Trying to use the "See" function as per the Adobe how to instructions but it looks dodgy 3 things there is no forced space between what people will look for and where i want them to "see". this is despite me putting a space after COPD why isn't this nicely nested on the next line with a page number? why is there no option to italisise? Apologees for the dodgy picture. Scales badly when attached here

Thanks Rob None of that worked particularly step 3. Select the pages of the spread Page Panel Menu > Deactivate "Allow Selected Pages to Shuffle" Select only one page of the spread in the page panel and drag it to its side until a beam appears release Also looked at the video on the link provided, got single pages above one another, (again a sloppy method to do a simple task), however increasing the craphic to the bleed edge resulted in the same issue essentially can get a ledt page and a seperate right page maybe a windows thing? every exmple and online graphic is iOS s

Next issue Developing 500 page book and Cross referencing (CR) such as "see Sexual and reproductive health, page xxx". This CR might need to be used dozens of times throughout the manual. I have 90 topics which also require CR as required. Have made Text Anchors according to all the online forums and official Adobe instructions, however: - when i insert or remove a page from the book the error "the referenced paragraph or text anchor is missing" - when i select the whole book and "update all cross-references", cross-references do not update - i have to update cross-references manually all over again This is my 3rd edition over 8 years of this manual and i dont understand why this is happening Any help appreciated please do not send links to "how to cross-reference" - been there done that Thank you Sean

Thanks Rob 550 pages Both folded and spiral bound versions of manual are printed Setting inside bleed to 0 worked a treat, but as above all page turners show a bleed "trim" colour, only the main page seems to invade the next page - very odd s

Thanks so much Rob This is exactly what i was looking for. You are right, the printers will trim the "invasive bleed" away This will do for me, but it still feels like fudging the bleed to disappear The bleed should come to the red line on the page with the bleed, not invade the next pages' attributes (as above) It seems a sloppy work around for such a top notch piece of software. But hey im happy Thanks again Rob Sean

Thanks Willi While this might be true (designers not wanting a geometric pure line), it looks sloppy Optical alignment changes all following bullet and heading alignment in the same text box So far outlining text is the only pure fix i have found, whether im using it to align text (manuipulate a letter) or for graphic design purposes. But this is also sloppy

Thanks Rob Researched all this previously and read the articles Using optical margin alignment reconfigures all bullet points and headings alignment in the same text frame My whole 600 page manual has only 1 font with consistent formatting throughout.

Hi Why is this the correct answer? Sure it solves the problem, but surely aligning any text should be a basic feature without having to converting it? What happens when i need to edit the text? Unconvert it, edit, reconvert? This is software failure

Thanks Mark, appreciated OK solved. I reread Bobs post and what i mistook as file extension, i was attributing to file "type" i clicked on file name extentions and noted .indd was missing    Of course i added .indd extension to the file and tah dah   As you were Support peeps - a simple fix, but still not sure why it happened. And only with v1.1 Meh, as long as this is all it takes to fix, i can live with it thank you all - highly appreciated sean

Thank you all - great to get feedback so quickly. So a few things. Version control is a common feature of working and evolving files. Verson 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 then as the file evolves to predraft Version 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 then to book publishing/files publication Version 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 etc. This is THE common file evolution standard, using another standard is not recognised good practice/governance. It works for every other software platform without problem. As you can see the file ext. is still recognised as .indd with version control - the above files evolved with version control sometimes to 2.6 etc, without issue. The issue seems to have begun spontaenously (after 8 years of reviewing and updating a 700 page book without issue) - but only with certain files and only with .indd. I save a file as an .indd (in the file type section with a new version no. as per normal) and suddenly it doesn't want to recognise the file as an .indd, but rather a .1 file type. It's bizzare and uncharacteristic of InDesign (again it only happens with InDesign). Im trying to pin down the issue - it appears to only effect v1.1 but im trying to replicate with higher version control (1.2, 1.3. etc). Again thank you for the feedback - I'll get back as soon as I have more info Sean

Latest ID used for many years no problem I save numerous files with version control e,g, MDC_dyslipidaemia_v1.0, MDC_dyslipidaemia_v1.1, MDC_dyslipidaemia_v1.2 note v1.0, v1.1....etc suddenly when i save a file with an incremental number, ID stops recognising it as a file name, instead recognises it as a file extension i.e. a .1 file (dot one file) for 6 years this has not been a problem. it suddenly started. i have not changed or done anything differently Any help appercaited sean
