Man you guys remember the times (not that distant ago maybe 3 years?) that photoshop just used to 'work' without these amateur bugs plaguing us every single day? Today, I cant even save my psd file as a PDF.
"Could not save a copy as _______ because of a problem writing the print file.
Good times.
Anyone know if there is a legacy option I'm not seeing like "Allow photoshop to save files" or something? I already have "Do not append copy to the filename" checked off, so im not sure why the dialogue box is saying its "Saving a copy"

@Makerman111111 is not wrong though... My drivers are "Up to date" btw, according to my windows drive manager. They literally auto update daily. I couldnt even update my drivers if I tried. Second, I'm not even sure I have gaming drivers. Is that there in my system info? I don't think I've had any intentions of gaming on this PC since reformating windows a few times ago. And this has never ever ever been an issue with photoshop (which I have been using for years and years). But yeah, sure, I update photoshop, it breaks, and of course its "something with your pc, it could never be photoshop" Some actual troubleshooting: I noticed something today when attempting to use photoshop - it was freezing 90% of the time when I would move an artboard (or any layer) beyond where any other artboards had already been, basically changing the Canvas size. Any time an artboard changed the canvas size, photoshop just derps and takes forever or crashes. It is a big file, but come on. I can do this with figma in literally 2 seconds. Photoshop... 1 minutes... 2 minutes? Crashes? Was anything changed in Canvas code / how it works in recent photoshop updates or anything? I am on Windows, and I bet you it went something like this: "Basically per usual Apple does things their own stupid way, so photoshop had to dumb down some coding to accomodate Apple, and ruin a functional experience for Windows users in turn. But don't worry it works fine (while simultaneously not working fine).

Why I'm confident it made 0% difference before testing is because ive used this file management method for YEARS AND YEARS and the only difference is photoshop keeps getting "better and better after every update" /s

Yeah, made literally zero difference saving to my HD... Want me to screen record what its like working inside of the "latest and greatest" photoshop on my PC so you can see first hand just how bad it is? It's literally un-usable, while touting itself as an industry leader. Every. single. update. gets. worse. and. worse. How is this possible?

I think this is 0% relevant Why? Because if i pull out the Move tool and move the artboard with my mouse - we encounter the nudge problem. 2-5 minutes for a nudge, or a PS crash. In contrast, if i create a selection where I want to place the artboard > pull out the move tool > then use the align tools > it happens instantly, no lag There is something seriously derping (as usual) with some basic functions. For the sake of argument though, I'm going to save this same file to my local HD and test to see if the same embarassing level of performance continues from PS.

I've posted my system info in other threads and its completely more than adequate. This is a gaming PC. Files are stored on dropbox > but not sure what difference that makes when i have a file open in photoshop and doing something like perform a simple nudge then crashes the phtooshop, or takes 5 minutes. This is pathetic. Does photoshop just belong in the dumpster now? Once the greatest program of all time, now cant even perform the most rudimentary tasks *facepalm*

Is it just me or has the quality and performance of PS been on a steady free fall downwards? I am working with a file that has 6 art boards, all of them 1920px wide. I nudge one of the artboards and photoshop freezes, and either takes 5 minutes to compelte the nudge, or just crashes. I have a gaming computer capable of great things. This is not a "me problem" Is there a fix to this? I just updated photoshop and its worse than ever. Anything we photoshop users can go back to having photoshop performance levels from 2018? Best,

I dont think there is any firewall or antivirus even set up The date is correct... Yes. The only "synchronizing app" i know of is adobe cloud Just turned off "Save in background" and "Export in background" options and that seemed to do the trick. Export is working as it should be again. Gotta love those "Adobe things"

It seems to be happening with every file I use. Today I opened up a different project file, tried exporting some 250x250 artboards, and all 5 of them export as .tmp , never maiking it into their png form.

why is it everytime an Adobe program stops working as it should, starts derping, its always "It could be your computer" or "maybe your file is too complex" And yet, every single time, everoyne always says "Oh, yeah, your computer is great" Sigh. The artboards are very simple. Varying in size. 1 shape to create the logo. one of the artboards that gets stuck as .tmp is one of the smallest artboards, a favicon. Square shape and a C shape. Nothing complex. Something even MS Paint could handle. This screams like one of Adobe's "typical" failures. Just hoping this has surfaced before and there is a way to fix this. Troubleshootting my PC doesnt help. This is about as relevant as what I had for breakfast, but here it is......... I am on Windows 10. I was running on 27.9 but i just updated last night to see if thats the issue, but no, 28.1 does the same thing my PC is a gaming pc, so it has plenty of everything. I save the files to my D: drive hard drive. Illustrator is installed on my SSD C: drive. The artboards are various versions of a simple logo. I am wearing grey socks, and a black t-shirt I had cereal for breakfast My car is black Hope that helps This problem is exactly as simple as I described. I NEVER EVER EVER had issues exporting artboards as PNG in the past, and now all of a sudden 30-40% of the artboards get stuck in .tmp and never finish the png export. For what its worth, exporting as SVG works without issue. But I need PNG.

Really annoying and frustrating problem. One of the most basic functions > "Export > Export for screens" > Saving as PNG > is not working as it should I have a file with 10 artboards and when I export for screens as png, some of the files get exported as .tmp Its almost like illustrator is choking with a png export function. Is there a fix for this? Was it because of one of those "infamous" adobe updates?

In an ideal world you should be able to create a selection of all the black > create path from selection > then turn that path into a shape. The problem is that photoshop's "create path from selection" function is a big failure and you end up with an awful looking (probly unrecognizable) path/shape.

@jane-e Im not talking as far back as 1994, I was probably only playing Paperboy back then and possibly dabbling with ms paint a couple years later. But there was a time I remember where Transforming layers and shapes was a much more precise method than compared to today. Something is different, and I can't put my finger on it. There was more freedom to it. I also don't ever remember seeing edges blown out like this. But, maybe I never used center align stroke back then (I usually never do, its an annoying thing photoshop sometimes auto-applies nowadays), so I never saw the issue. And maybe I didnt even have X/Y position boxes back then, so again maybe I wouldve never seen the issue by positioning something on 0.5 px I only started seeing blown out edges when the "modern" cloud version of photoshop was forced upon us all. That may just be a coincidence, I dunno. But it definitely feels different.

@D Fosse I guess I have to ask "why" is there no such thing as fractions of a pixel... And that might seem like a dumb question to you, but if we are allowed to use fractions of a pixel to map our positions, why can't those fractions also directly affect the rendering of a pixel? It almost sounds like there could be a hack workaround where "we users" need to see "faux" pixel numbers, and the actual pixels have a 10x10 behind each 1. It would mean "10.5px" is actually 105px, or 105points. Im guessing that would come with its own problems, but at least we wouldnt have blurry ugly edges.

@D Fosse I'm not an adobe engineer, so maybe just maybe an adobne engineer would have better insight. But from a mathematical and logical standpoint, I would achieve this by making a visual "1px" actually created by a 10x10 grid. So every pixel is visually created by 10x10 grid behind it. This way "1.5px" is actually 15 points and doesnt explode the edge If you are actually wondering what a half pixel would look like, Ive attached an image.

Problem: Currently, if you have a shape positioned at X: 100px, and apply 1px center stroke, since photoshop can't actually create half pixels on either side, so it ends up creating a mathematical hack job by creating a 2px wide stroke and compensating for this by giving it a transparent fill, so that "mathematically" you end up with a "1px stroke" in terms of fill values or weight, but a visually blurred shape edge. The same thing happens to edges of shapes if you position them off whole-numbers Solution/idea: Short answer, allow photoshop to create half pixels. Long answer, can't photoshop use some math to properly address this and apply an actual 1px stroke? I think technically this would mean photoshop has to introduce the ability to split pixels from whole numbers into decimal points 0.1 to 0.9. But just to be clear, I'm not saying we need the ability of a 1.5px stroke, whole number strokes are fine, the problem is how strokes are rendered and shape edges are rendered depending on their posititons away from whole numbers. The ideal final product: Say I have a shape positioned at X: 100, and I apply 1px stroke > Photoshop applies an actual 1px stroke and positions the stroke properly so it only takes up half a pixel on either side of the shape edge. This seems like such a simple mathematical formula: "Apply 1px center stroke, but shift it by 0.5px" INSTEAD OF the visual nightmare of: "Apply 1px center stroke, but actually apply 2px stroke and make each side semi-transparent to compensate for position away from whole number" Attaching images so you can see what im referring to (different scenartios thhat look visually awful)

Predictably bad, yes. 1a and 2a are what I also said happens. I'm not arguing that. I don't think there was a misunderstanding on my part, as your screenshots are exactly my experience as well, and that's where my problem stems from. Stroke inside or outside works just fine (unless you offset your shape from a whole number) You can see that the transparency fill on either side of 2a is directly related to the offset position from the whole number. One side of the stroke is 80% fill on the stroke, while the other is about 20% (guessing), because you have it at 0.2px position (guessing). You can't possibly look at your screenshots compared to every modern and "professional" program out there and say "Yep, looks about right". They are atrocious. You say photoshop has always handled shapes this way, but I don't remember seeing such hideous looking shapes until the cloud version came out though. Maybe you're right, and its just time to switch over to figma where none of the multiple problems with basic functions that i experience with photoshop, exist. It actually broke my heart and made my tummy hurt when I heard Adobe is, or did? acquire figma. Hoping Adobe doesnt end up breaking that program with their "modernness" Is it really that hard (or impossible) for a "pixel program" to simply work with fractions of a pixel? We can position a shape to a fraction of a pixel, but can't maintain the quality of the edge?

hey @Kenneth Kawamoto there was indeed a miscomnunication but not how Fosse suggests. I actually already have Snap Vector Tools and Transforms to Pixel Grid selected, and the screenshot I shared in the beginning is actually a buggy/erroneous way that Adobe shows positions in this scenario. Just to explain, so everyone can learn, the shape in my screenshot is actually positioned on 615px, but like dave and jane explained, since there is a 1px center stroke applied, Adobe basically applies a "0.5px" stroke to either side of the line, resulting in "614.5px." which you see in the screenshot Now, thats not actually true in two ways. Way 1: The box is actually positioned at 615px, but when you view the layer it shows 614.5px because of the "0.5px" stroke applied to either side. Way 2: It's not actutally 614.5px either, thats a lie, because its not actually applying a 0.5px stroke as dave and jane clearly explained. What its actually doing is applying a 1px stroke to either side with 50% of the color assigned, meaning it actually grows a full 1px to 614px, and thats what it should display, instead of 614.5px. Just to get technical, and expand more on this weirdness, if I had the shape positioned at 614.1px with 1px center stroke, I'd end up with the same 614px final product, but the 1px on the left would be 90% black while the 1px on the inside would be 10% black. The gimpy stroke fill is directly related to the X position and the offset from a whole number. Seems like lazy coding/engineering. This should be considered a bug, and a failure by Adobe, whether the "community experts" want to admit it or not. To suggest this is "as it should be" is ludicrous, and a slap to every professional out there. You can explain 'why' its this way, thats fine, and I understand now 'why', but dont pretend it 'should be' this way. Especially considering photoshop use to handle shapes and any position just fine.

"If you require, sharpness regardless of size or zoom level then don't use a pixel editor" @davescm Instead of bashing photoshop and telling me to change programs so I can achieve the most basic of functions wokring properly, wouldnt it be better to note the problem, and try to get adobe to fix it? The fact remains that a rasterized layer measuring the same dimensions [100x20 for arguments sake] can handle any decimal position just fine, but when a shape layer uses decimals the integrity of the line falls apart. "You can scale up the shape layer as big as you want and not lose quality, but you cannot position it off of true whole numbers (meaning no decimal positioning ever) or it will look worst than a rasterized layer" ...Make it make sense.

Just take this screenshot as an example that something is seriously wrong with photoshop. Select Shapes tool > Left click canvas > Assign 100 x 20 px size > and since photoshop loves to auto-add a 1px border that I never asked for, this is how it appears. The 1px border just exagerates how bad and ugly the edges of a shape are. It's weird. I was trying to test if this only when i click to create, or always drag and drop create. In one document it happens every time, 0.5 pixel position, every time, no matter where I click, no matter if i click to create or drag and drop. In a different document, repeating the steps actually gives me a perfect whole number every time no matter what? Now I'm confused why one document only deals in .5 pixels and the other only works in whole numbers when creating shapes Edit: oops forgot screenshot

@jane-e I can see it on every zoom level, though its less noticable zoomed out But @Kenneth Kawamoto you are actually 100% right! Whole pixel position looks like it DOES fix the blurry edge. Never noticed that before! Makes sense why [Ctrl + Transform and nudge it once] fixes this also, since transform only works with whole numbers (that's something i miss about old photoshop) I will jsut say adjusting the horizontal position to a whole number only fixes left/right, I have to adjust the Y number as well to get 4 clean edges. I think at that point the quicker way is still to [Ctrl + T and nudge transform by 1px], which is still kind of annoying to deal with. It's worth mentioning that a Rasterized layer has no problem with 0.5 pixel positions. It scoots into position just fine with no loss of quality to the edges. Where as a Shape, basically a "vector" element (supposedly held in the highest regard), cannot handle 0.5 pixel positions. That seems backwards at the very least. There. has. to. be. a. better. way.

Hello, I believe ever since switching over to the cloud version of photoshop I've never been able to get shapes to have crisp edges anymore. They all have a 1pixel blurry edge around all 4 sides. Even if I left-click the canvas and create a shape with dimensions like 100x20, all 4 edges have a blurry "un-crisp" edge This kind of defeats the purpose of using a shape/vector. The only way to get a crisp edge now out of the shapes tool is to create the shape then transform it. The transforming snaps it back into crispyness. Is there a "legacy shapes" option? Or some setting in photoshop to make shapes be crisp as they should? Im attaching a screenshot to illustrate this. The black box was created with dimensions 100x20 and it still ends up looking pixelated.

Here are two screen recordings to illustrate two issues with the gradient tool that make it un-unusable. This can only be an oversight by adobe, right? 1. Gradient moves out of position when canvas size is changed: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/frh4c84yd4oi1kl8yex4u/GRADIENT-CANVAS-SIZE-FAIL.mp4?rlkey=irdd8td7df8... 2. Gradient does not move when you move the group its in, or the gradient itself (and you can see the masks are all locked) https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/de7dywdp81yey14uc4p6o/GRADIENT-GROUP-MOVE-FAIL.mp4?rlkey=2n2nmzh14ha11c4whr9c6mwux&dl=0https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/de7dywdp81yey14uc4p6o/GRADIENT-GROUP-MOVE-FAIL.mp4?rlkey=2n2nmzh14ha1...

I am aware of this, but like I mentioned in the original post the color selection method has been changed / made harder. Maybe it was an oversight from the Adobe team to also revert the color selection actions The gradient tool used to take the color of your primary color. So all you had to do was quickly pick the right color, and your gradient would update. Amazingly fast especially if you are doing gradient masking. Now, you have to use the awful UX gradient color selector window with the scroll bar. It makes multiple tasks I do daily become longer than they need to be

Before the terrible new gradient tool was introduced, if i changed my primary color then the active gradient color would also change. This made it VERY EASY and quick to update the gradient Im using. Say for example if I want to do a gradient mask I just have to hit D to reset colors, and boom i have a perfectly black gradient for the mask. Now it doesnt do that. I have to open the actual gradient color dropdown and double click the gradient color. WHY ruin this. This isn't the actual Classic Gradient tool. It's sad to see tools that have been around for generations and worked perfectly fine now stop working as they did with the latest greatested "hip" update.
