Just wanted to follow up and mention that there were times this weekend in my Project where I enabled the Hand Tool and still couldn't move the Program Monitor picture around without restarting Premiere (which 'fixed' the issue). It's frusturating to have to troubleshoot Premiere functionality across different updates when it was rock solid for years until someone decided to change it for style points (e.g. scroll/pan Program Monitor, dupe detection oddities, the tiny minimalistic FX badges).

@MyerPj I'm on a MacBook Pro M2 Max using the latest 24.6.1 version. Because I work primarily off a laptop, I have to "~ full screen" into the Program Monitor to view the details clearly. Before today, I also couldn't figure out why the Hand Tool wasn't switching with the keyboard. I had to always undo full screen and mouse click the Hand Tool, so I unfairly hated the new behavior of the Program Monitor/Source Monitor zoom in with mouse.

I found a weird behavior with trying to access the Hand Tool due to my custom keyboard settings. This might help a few others. I have "H" mapped as a shortcut for "add edit" on my custom keyboard layout. Whenever I was zoomed-in on the Program Monitor, I couldn't keyboard stroke over to the Hand Tool easily. I even tried re-mapping the "H" key back to Hand Tool, but that strangely didn't work and stayed on the 'arrow' tool. I had to add a modifier to this shortcut as "SHIFT + H" for Hand Tool to be able to quickly keystroke over to it. Now, I can mouse scroll zoom in when trying to fine tune something and hit my keyboard shortcut for Hand Tool to move the frame around. I wonder if others who are using custom keyboard layouts are running into issues with trying to switch over to hand tool using the keyboard. It was a convoluted process to having to mouse click the hand tool up until this solve.

24.6.1 fixed this dupe detection issue: the Duplicate Frames indicator shows on the smallest track size with this update. FX badges remain unchanged without improvement

I just downloaded and opened PP 24.6.1 (Build 2) to do a quick trial. I imported one .R3D file and one separate sound file that syncs together nicely for an interview. When I did a manual sound sync by matching the timecodes of both files, I was able to replicate the SAME PROBLEM I had in the previous Premiere version where the timecode from the sound file in the Source Monitor did not match the timecode shown in the TC Overlays of this same file. I did figure out a fix, though. When I right-clicked the sound file in the Project, I went to 'Timecode' to see what the file was showing. Time Display Format was showing '23.976 fps Timecode' (without me changing anything) which should have been correct. I changed this setting over to 'Use Default Time Display'. Upon changing from 23.976 to Default, the timecode "fixed" itself and the TC Overlays were now correct and matching the Source Monitor. Hope this helps anyone running into this. I've attached a bunch of screenshots for reference.

I need to recheck this later this evening. As of last week, I was still seeing the wrong Audio file TC in Overlays versus what the actual file time code in my current project.

I still can't believe that Dupe Detection "lines" indicators won't show on the smallest sized tracks and that you need to increase track size to see them. It's so unnecessary.

Thank you. I have never downloaded the Beta version before, so it's nice to see the Duplicate Frame bug fixed. Still, it's a bummer that the minimalist FX badge is here to stay as you predicted.

24.4 also messed up FX badges and dupe detection along with other behaviors that worked perfectly fine over the past however many years.

I wrote this in another thread regarding 24.4.1 with the, IMO, downgrade in FX badge visibility: Why did Premiere choose form over function when it comes to this new version's emphasis on minimalism. The functionality has been compromised over a "cleaner" visual aesthetic. How is this an improvement for working professionals?

Hi Ann, thanks for also escalating this. I figure if you and other experts are running into these problems then hopefully some of the Premiere team will take notice. It's a bummer to hear that you think these changes are unlikely to be reverted. This thread has specifically called out the FX badge problems with the last update. After using this version over the past few weeks, I've also noticed related problems with this UI changes: Duplicate Frame/Dupe Detection clips can't be seen with duplicate frames on the video layer unless you increase the track size (which is insane) Selecting a clip on the timeline with certain label colors can be difficult to see what has been selected

IMO, the new 24.4.1 FX badges are too difficult to tell what has Effects without spending precious time zooming into the tiny FX letters and investigating. The old FX badges could give you a general sense of information by just glancing and seeing yellow/purple/etc square badges on your clips in the timeline.

With the minimalistic FX badges that have replaced the bigger and colorful badges, it's such a visual nightmare right now to figure out what parts of my timeline have effects. I hope this gets patched ASAP.

Wow, I just found out about this today after booting up 24.4.1. Who thought this was an improvement going from the obvious "yellow FX badge" to a thinly font FX on black?

@GP241 Industries @Kevin-Monahan The workaround works, but I also see where GP241 is coming from; this is an annoying bug in Premiere where going through the 'File Directory' makes you see all of the segments of an R3D file which isn't helpful at all. I, too, am on a MacBook M2 Max Apple Silicon system.

Hi Kevin, just wanted to chime in that your workaround using "File Directory"/eyeball worked for me when I was encountering the same issue of the thumbnails not showing up on R3D files. I initially thought maybe it was because I was attaching an exFAT drive to a Macbook.

Dupe detection in Premiere messed up entirely I came across someone mentioning this on Reddit regarding the issue possibly stemming from MacBook Pros (?). It looks like you're not the only one with this Dupe Detection/Duplicate Frames bug!

@mattchristensen @Stan Jones Since moving over to 24.1, I haven't ran into the error message using Text panel and haven't had a crash. Thank you for letting me know that this issue was fixed with the latest version, and that my new expensive Macbook wasn't the culprit.

@mattchristensen @stan I migrated my current project over to 24.1 today (from 23.6.2 which was crashing constantly yesterday). Worked for roughly 12 hours today in the latest Premiere without a crash or error in the Text panel while using the same M2 Max MacBook Pro. Cautiously optimistic and relieved right now.

Hi Stan: Unfortunately, I experienced more crashes lasts night with the Text panel open with my transcriptions during editing. The error and crashes happened during different scenarios versus what I saw in the morning when I cut out and then re-inserted my problematic area of footage as a temporary solve. I crashed Premiere when using the trim tool doing a rolling edit. I also crashed the program when trying to open the Text panel. My project was started and has been worked in 23.6. During the past two weeks, I haven't experienced any problems with the Text panel or transcriptions using my M2 Pro Mac mini system. Yesteday, though, I crashed more than a dozen times using this new M2 Max MacBook Pro which was pretty confusing to me since the system has double the RAM and GPU cores. I only tried opening the project in 24.0.3 to see if my crashes using Text panel transcription would carry over to a newer Premiere version...and they did. I will attempt to migrate my project over to 24.1 today and see if I have the same problems as yesterday.

@mattchristensen Thanks Matt. I will attempt to migrate my project over to PP 24.1 today using my new M2 Max MacBook Pro. I'll update you later if this stabalizes my crashes from yesterday. Do you know if this issue was specifically a problem with either the M2 Max chip or the MacBook Pro? I didn't run into any crashes using a M2 Pro Mac mini during my first two weeks on this project.

Prior system: M2 Pro Mac mini (19 core GPU; 32 GB RAM) - Ventura macOS New system: M2 Max Macbook Pro 16" (38 core GPU; 64 GB RAM) - Ventura macOS I have been working on a project that has been solely in PP 23.6.2 that has a few hours of interviews that have been "Text/Transcribed". No issues whatsover until today when I switched Mac systems. I was making revisions to a sequence and had the "Text" tab open to view the interview transcription details. The error mentioned in this post came up and eventually my system crashed. I was able to repeat this error and crash about 5-10 times. I attempted multiple solutions: resetting workspace, offline/online (replace footage) for the clips and eventually entire project, reset settings, reset cache, and even tried opening the project in PP 24.0.3 and was still able to reproduce the issue of error message and crash. My workaround fix that I stumbled across was pinpointing which audio/video clip kept producing the crash and deleting the moment from my sequence. I then went back and re-cut this clip from the Source Monitor into my timeline, and at least for this moment, I haven't had an error or crash using "Text/Transcription". I'm not confident that this problem has gone away, and I wanted to share with the community to see if there's any details on why this is happening in both PP 2023 and PP 2024.

I also experienced this problem, again, in PP 23.6.2 on a Mac Mini M2 Pro (32 GB RAM). As everyone above has mentioned, turning off "Duplicate Frames" solves most of the lag and sluggishness of moving through the timeline. I recall this also being an issue years ago, and I found a thread on Creative Cow dating back to 2014 that had the same temporary solve for this: Creative Cow - Lag and Sluggishness with Complex Timelines .

I have the same exact issue. First time working in PP 23.6.2. On Mac Mini M2 Pro - Ventura OS 13.5. I'm attaching a screenshot that also shows the same issue; roughly off by :40 when using TC Overlays in the Program Monitor. I'm glad others are also speaking up about this bug or issue.
