Question

Links in Signature's

Hi Everyone,

I am posting this thread, as more of a voting forum wherein we take a call on whether links after signatures should or should not be allowed.

For e.g - when a person signs after writing his reply or giving a answer he can put a signature like -

<name>

<www.website.com>

or

<name>

<www.name.facebook.com>

or

<name>

<name@email.com>

But the site moderator's delete the links as they find it unnessary. Now if the link is in the middle of the post they can remove it but if a person wants to sign with his link, should he be given atleast that much courtesy for answering a question or posting a reply.

People would prefer to share their e-mails, blogs, Facebook profile, linkedin profile, web sites, etc. It adds a personal touch and also lets other know who the person is.

Let's us discuss via this thread how the links would be a positive thing to the forum and how it will form a part of personal signatures in the future.

    Hy everyone,

    I think the links should be removed. This is a blog where you ask questions and look for help. If you want to promote your business  /blog / facebook  page, just pay some money and do it. You don't need to waist other people time by reading your garbage post just to promote your link. Agree for  immediate delete.

    I think the links should be removed.

    I would agree, but with some serious thought on how germane the links are to the thread. A good example would be a user in the PS forum, asking for plug-in recs. for a particular purpose. Then, even commercial links should be allowed in the thread, and by my experience, they are. There are circumstances, where even fully commercial links should be allowed, and historically, Adobe has been very cool with those. It has been the same, where a user has a particular need, and someone offers the suggestion for another program to do the job better - Adobe has been very good at allowing this, even if the program competes with an Adobe program at some level. I salute Adobe for this stance, as many other software companies ban any reference to a competitor's product.

    If I have a social-networking link, then those can appear in my profile, and should not appear elsewhere, IMHO.

    Signatures depends on the membership status of the member. It also depends on what type of signature it will be. Porn are big NO! I guess you need to read the Terms of the forums for complete details.

    @John   Hi John

    Actually I was little bit confused, I am not able to differentiate a non commercial nature of content and commercial content.  If a forum participate, posts his views, reply to unanswered queries depending on his skills, really doesn't deserve to get a link to his own site. Most of the time, when its a forum or articles directory, content are considered qualitative and even get direct link to the article or post.  But if the similar content is posted on some personal blog or website, it is taken commercial. please make me clear.

    Thanks

    Commercial sites are usually selling something.

    For the reasons stated in the other posts, I believe that very few would want any changes in the present rules and practices.

    Agreed, Jacob, except when they are applied with excessive rigor. I reported two messages in the Spanish forums by the same author because they included as signature a link to a gaming site. This person's profile still shows he posted in those two threads (the last two in the screeshot), but his messages were simply removed!

    And what about people like me, who DON'T want to share

    their email addesses with the whole world,

    and who, for similar reasons, don'

    t have a blog, and dont want to get anywhere near to Faceboo

    k, Twitter and the like?

    If I want to know something about a participant who hasn't included that something in his/her profile, a minimum of courtesy would be to ask that person via a private personal mail.

    Am I so old fashioned as to being alone in thinking like this?

    Extra line breaks provided by the non updated software of the site.

    Claudio,

    I agree completely here. If I wish, or need to make contact, the PM functions very well.

    I am not sure what your expectations are that will happen, but I want to

    make sure you understand that these forums are not a democracy. You are

    welcome to raise issues that you feel should change, but in the end

    Adobe, by the voice of our BDFL, decides on policy issues.

    For e.g - when a person signs after writing his reply or giving a answer he can put a signature like -

    It isn't so much a matter of necessity as it is a matter of value. Links

    you want to add are judged on the value they add for the readers. First

    by everybody who reads the message and has the opportunity to use the

    report abuse link to report such links as spam, second by the moderators

    who act upon those reports.

    People would prefer to share their e-mails, blogs, Facebook profile, linkedin profile, web sites, etc.

    Shouldn't we take a 180° different direction? Is it about what you want

    others to see (that sounds very much like advertising), or what others

    want to see about you?

    If it is about the discussion, put it in the message. If it is about

    you, put it on your profile page where interested people can still find it.

    By the way, you should know that hosts/moderators don't go patrolling the forums to look for links.  When a link is removed, there's a very high likelihood that someone hit the "Report Abuse" button, or the offending post has been reported to the Spam Thread in this particular forum here.  Really, the hosts do have better things to do, but they will react when commercial or self promotion is reported to them.

    Posting your email in public, where the automated spambots can harvest it, is not a good idea—unless you love to be spammed.

    If the link leads to a page where something is sold, services are offered or donations are requested, it should and will be deleted.

    This has ben the practice for over a decade and should continue to be.

    The terms of use (TOU) prohibit self promotion on these forums.

    I think the criterion is whether the link is to a commercial site.

    Also there is oppportunity in the user profile for self-promotion.
