Question

Will adding a RTX3060 12gb GPU card help with timeline performance, grading, tweaking effects, etc ?

Hi Guys,

I want to add a Nvidia 3060 12gb version to my system to get better timeline performance and when twiddling with effects and color grading. Final render speeds for me take a back seat. I can wait. What i want is more responsiveness on the UI for color grading. For example when i change workspaces theres a 7 to 8 secs pause the the screens white out. I want to over come these.

My current rig is...
*Processor -Ryzen 7 -5700G (8 Cores+16 Threads) @ Base Clock 3.8 Ghz And Max Boost Clock 4.6 Ghz (Architecture -Zen 3). Socket AM4. 4 MB L2 Cache. 16 MB L3 Cache. Inbuilt IGPU Vega 8 (8 Core/2000 Mhz) graphics, 4K supported (3 Monitor Support). PCI Express (PCIe) v3.0. Power 65w TDP. Max Operating Temp 95C. RAM Type DDR4-3200 Mhz Max, Max 128 GB RAM (dual channel).

*Motherboard -Asus Prime B550M-A-Wifi2, Socket AM4, 3 Monitor Support, 4x DDR4 RAM Slots @ 3200 mhz (128 GB Max), PCIe v4.0, HDMI (4K Support) +DVI-D+VGA Ports, InBuilt Wifi6 & Bluetooth v5.2, 2x M.2 NVMe Slots, 4x SATA3 Ports, 6x USB 3.2 Rear Ports, 2x USB 3.2 Front Panel Ports (Via Internal Header), 4x USB 2.0 Front Panel Ports (Via Internal Header), 2x AURA RGB Headers.

*RAM -64GB, 4x 16GB, Kingston FURY, Black, DDR4, 3200mhz, CL16 (Model -KF432C16BB1~16).

*Graphics Card -Nil. Using processor IGPU Vega 8 (8 Core/2000 Mhz) graphics.

*OS Drive -WD BLACK SN770, M.2 250GB NVMe SSD.

*Scratch Drive -Western Digital WD SN550 Blue, M.2 250GB NVMe SSD.

*Projects Drive -Crucial MX500 1TB Sata3 SSD (CT1000MX500SSD1).

*Media Drive -Seagate 2TB (ST2000DM001), SATA3, 7200rpm.

*Render Drive -Seagate 500GB (ST500DM002), SATA3, 7200rpm.

*Corsair CV650 PSU (Bronze Certified).

Nothing great i know. A simple yet very robust build it has been so far. On just IGPU graphics i edit 4K projects even without proxies and im able to get real-time playback (1/2 res setting on the preview window) with color-grading and some simple fx added to the clips. The key is that all of my projects are short format (1-5 mins final length mktg films).

Only thing is Transition Points / Warp Stabilizer / DeNoising / And Some Certain Effects ask for a GPU and dont render or playback realtime. I want better performance on the timeline and read online that the 3060 (or 3060ti ?) can give me better timeline scrubbing, right now its silky smooth, except for the above mentioned bottleneck points. I want to be able to add effects without pauses when doing so and colorgrade without that slight pause before it reflects, lagginess. Can i get the same smooth scrubbing etc at the abovementioned bottleneck spots and will prerenders and renders speed up to a "noticable" level ?

Thanks.

Unless you go new everywhere you will always have a compromise !.

From where you are - you could consider picking up an Nvidia  3060 or even 4000 series card off eBay for your current setup. Many gamers are ditching these to go 5000 series now.

When you have a new Motherboard and CPU (step 2) you could eventually (as step 3) go to a better GPU as you have a PCi 5.0 motherboard.

@Stonehedge

I would recommend that you go for the 3060 now,  then upgrade your motherboard and CPU/RAM when your budget allows.

Not sure it would be worth investing in another AM4 socket processor at this stage.

I always wait until I have enough budget to make a real difference, but it's entirely up to you.

You could look at something like an Asus Prime B850M MicroATX (AM5 socket) if you want to stick with that size Motherboard. PCI 5.0 for Graphics (more future proof) and DDR 5 memory, 7700X CPU?

I tend to upgrade Motherboard and CPU together. Very often suppliers do a combo deal.

Good luck.

Ah youre actually right. Small upgrades never pay off. Only when a everything is new and completely overhauled to a new rig only then do we see "some" relevant difference. But will this 3060 surely sustain thru ? but again this wont work to full potential on PCIe5 right ? Then the card becomes the cripple when everything else is changed.

On a side note does the AM5 platform really mean a huge step up for Pr and Ae ? If processor / mobo / ram is all pcie5 and with a PCIe5 graphics card (but those must cost extremely high right).

@RjL190365

Good overview and I don't know how I picked up the wrong spec on the 5700G. The source I used claimed no on board graphics.

Trying to navigate a large spec spreadsheet late at night should obviously be avoided !.

It is clear @Stonehedge  has a dilemma on what route to take next.
The 3060 would add assisted GPU effects as an interim, although as you point out would not fully utilise the capabilities due to the PCi lane restrictions.

To start again with motherboard and new CPU might be way out of budget. Why not add the 3060 and plan a second phase upgrade ?.

@RjL190365 what would you recommend?

The RTX 3060 is about the best that I can recommend at this time as a stopgap solution, and one that can be carried over to a newer build.

Thank you for your suggestion. My current mobo the 5700g is running on is the ASUS B550M (AM4 Sock) and if im right its PCIe 4. So if i put in the 3060 and then go for a Ryzen 7700 kind of AM4 sock processor in the future ? Will the entire system then at least use the 3060 to the fullest for a better Pr UI experience ?

My first question is why you have gone for the Nvidia 3060?

Is this budget constraint? . If so fair enough, but if your budget can stretch look at 4070 or the Ti version.

Your Ryzen cpu has no on board graphics and the Vega 8 graphics card is now quite an old product.

Based on the fact I use an Nvidia 2070 super in my older back up machine this performs well, however I am using it with Intel 9900K which also has on board iGPU.

The current Nvidia studio driver supports the 3060 so I don't see why you would not see a timeline performance improvement on your machine versus the Vega 8 card.

The problem with the OP's system is the Ryzen 7 5700G itself. It does not support PCI-e 4.0 at all — only PCI-e 3.0. Thus, many of the newer GPUs will be bottlenecked by the lower-throughput PCI-e bus in addition to the weaker CPU.

I know the OP is trying to stay within budget, but the planned RTX 3060 is at current street prices too expensive for the modest performance that it delivers. Unfortunately, the only available Nvidia choices that are priced around the same price point have less VRAM (only 8 GB total) than that RTX 3060, which makes the shortcomings of the 5700G's PCI-e 3.0 bus bandwidth even more evident since any rendering project which requires more VRAM than what's on the graphics card must now go through the slower, older bus to the page file drive (that system's main SSD, which is much slower than any type of system RAM). And that is one of the biggest failings of having an AMD APU, which sacrifices total PCI-e bandwidth and throughput in favor of giving a little more power to the integrated GPU. A very similar problem occurs with the newer Ryzen 8000G series APUs for socket AM5, which not only restricts PCI-e speed to PCI-e 4.0 clocks (versus PCI-e 5.0 with the non-APU Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series CPUs, most of which do include a very basic onboard GPU), but also the lane bandwidth to only eight lanes for the primary GPU slot (versus a full 16 lanes for the non-APU Ryzens).

As a result, the OP is stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to adding a GPU to that system today; its performance will never come close to fully utilizing even a modest GPU such as that planned RTX 3060 — and that forces the owner into a choice of either going way over-budget for a meaningful performance increase over his/her current config or settling for performance that still falls below that of today's budget PCs. Then again, almost anything will be a big improvement over the 5700G's now-outdated integrated graphics that only offers the most basic of hardware H.264/HEVC decoding (8-bit 4:2:0 only) and may not support hardware encoding of any kind.

Hi Thanks. But pointing me to large articles is not so helpful as i found very similar articles on google searches and thru AI and have read so much and all conflicting info that doesnt assure adding this card will be a positive or a negative. So i finally came here, as here we have only people who are using Pr with some kind of card. I was hoping to hear simple YES IT WORKS WELL for me kind of assurances from those who have this card (and theres great possibility many must be using it here bec it was the go to card for many video editors). Also other users might suggest an equivalently priced or segment card that is doing well on their system. Hearing this i can make an informed buying decision.

Well its nice that youve posted these links. But i read a few of these an nothing conclusively points me to making a buying decision on a card asap. I need to be an EXPERT like you to read that and understand.

On a side note if you know the answer im looking for is there. It means youve read those completely and understand the tech talk going on in there. So why dont you just tell me what you feel, if this card is a good fit for Pr or not. You would be helping me a lot by just chiming in your 2 cents.

I can't give you a yes or no answer

I have a different motherboard and cpu and nvidia card, so MY experience doesn't translate to your question

Hi, I posted in the VIDEO HARDWARE forum. Was that the wrong forum ? I think i also chose HARDWARE & GPU. But thanks for moving it to the right one anyway.
