proper way to edit long videos into clips for future videos + issue with choppy video in timeline

Hi all,

I'm trying to find the best way to edit long videos into shorter clips and save them for use in future projects. I’ve searched on Google and watched some YouTube videos, but they seem too focused on immediately creating a finished video, rather than organizing clips for later use.

Here’s what I’m trying to do:

I have several videos from my drone, all taken from the same location over a period of time. I want to go through each video, extract the good parts, and save them to a folder for future use. I haven’t been able to find a good tutorial that explains this process.

Also, when I mark the in and out points of a clip and drag it to the timeline, the playback in the timeline is really choppy, but the source window plays smoothly. Does anyone know why this happens or how to fix it?

    Load the video in the Source Monitor, then press I and O to set your in/out points. Next, press Cmd/Ctrl + U to create a subclip in your Project panel.

    After you've created all your subclips, select them all and choose File > Export > Media to export them.

      For the first part, I would use the work area bars to mark a section I want to save and export it with a descriptive title.   Continue to do that for each section you want to save.  Because of output processing compression, there will be some theoretical quality loss from the original but it probably won't be visible.   There are alternate output codec choices if you want to minimize that loss but the file sizes will be larger.  

       

      For the second part, know that what you see during editing is real time previews.  Your computer has to work very hard to do them.  If it can't keep up, your editing will be jerky.   There is a choice to edit with previews at a lesser resolution.   I typically use "1/4" with 4K footage from my drone.  You can also "render the time line" forcing improved previews.  The yellow and red lines above the timeline will turn green.  If none of that works you can try creating "proxy" files with tools provided in Premiere Pro.   With proxies, you edit smaller, more efficient files but when you create output Premier Pro defaults to using the originals.

      If i'm understanding you correctly, In my timeline I needed to first show the work bar area (click on the three lines stacked and then check mark work bar area). From there I move the sliders to the beginnig of the first clip and then at the end of the first clip, then File-Export_media. rename the file and export? and do this for the rest of the clips in the timeline?

      Is there a way to do this process in the source video without having to drag the clips into the timeline?

       

      I didn't realize that clicking on the time line and hitting enter would render the video, mine was set to full and now I have it at 1/4 and so much smother. So much to learn.
