Maybe try resetting preferences: To trash preferences in Premiere Pro, quit the application and then relaunch it while holding down the Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) key . A pop-up will appear asking to reset preferences; click "Okay" to confirm. This action resets your settings to factory defaults, which can help resolve issues and is often a good first troubleshooting step.

Have you tried re-sizing the window when it goes black to see if it brings the image back? Not an optimal fix but may be faster than re-starting.

You should export multiple projects through Media Encoder. If you have Media Encoder installed it is very simple to send your sequences and clips to that app and have it render multiple videos at a time and continue to work in Premiere if you like.

A shot in the dark might be to copy the video into a different folder and re-name it. Then try linking it to the other clip in Premiere. I'm wondering if it my have the same file name as another clip and that may cause a conflict.

Can you try re-setting the position of the gradient layer and see if that helps. Also if the gradient layer is a smaller frame size than the sequence that can be a problem.

You may need to add a marker at a matching sync point in the audio and video and line them up. However I am very interested in seeing what other solutions are brought forward for this.

The tutorial is making the comps 220x220 pixels which is pretty small especially if you want them the be 1000 px. You may want to modify the tutorial by making the comp larger.

With the source monitor in focus (Blue Outline) please type the Period (.) key and see if it drops down. Just to make sure that you're dragging it down properly.

There's a lot going with kind of video. My work flow is to advance frame by frame in the layer panel and correct the errors as they come up (if they do) It is time consuming but the results turn out well.
