Thank you for trying to help. I am using Windows 11 Pro 10.0.26200 and InDesign 21.1 x64.   I am looking at the font directory and trying to disable the Times New Roman font as you suggested, but I don’t see any option to disable it. I will attach a screen shot. Is that a way to disable it rather than delete it?   I have also tried adding a box to my document with the Times New Roman font in it and it shows up correctly. I have closed the document after adding this font to the document and reopened the document, the same problem persists. I was lucky that I was able to find this font in my previous document. However, I have another very large document that is doing the same thing. The blue circle is spinning, and it says that it is adding font Times New Roman Regular in the background.   I did a search for this font in my document. I set it to search for objects on paste board and non-printing objects. I came back with no results in this search.   This blue circle will remain trying to do this for hours and it never goes away. If for some reason it is trying to add the font, why would it take that long. This font is in my Windows fonts that are installed. I don’t understand.   Why is this background task trying to add the font Times New Roman Regular in the background? Here is what I figured out. I am using the latest version of InDesign 21.02. I logged out of my account and back into my account, but the same problem was still happening.   I did a search for that font, and it showed no results. However, after looking deeper, I found that I had this font, but it was not in my document, it was on the left side of my page outside of my document. This was the reason it did not show up in my search results. Once I removed this text box, saved the document and completely closed InDesign and reopened InDesign and the document (with the text box removed), the issue was resolved.   That leaves me with a three questions. 1. Is there a way to search through text boxes that are not in the documents but outside of the document?   2. If I have a document that causes this blue circle to come up and I close the document and there is no other document open, the blue circle continues to stay up there trying to add the font in the background task. If the is no document open, why is it doing this?   3. I have another large document with a lot of text boxes outside of the document that is doing the same thing. I can’t find the text box that is doing this because it will not search the boxes outside of the document. I don’t want to remove all the text boxes outside of document. I am sorry that it took so long to follow up on this post. The OS is up to date. I had a recent update since my last post. I also doublechecked to make sure I had all the updates. I just today had a bios update on my laptop. I am up to date on my bios. I waited because I was hoping it would eventually go away, but it has not. I booted in Safe Mode. I can not get InDesign to open in in Safe Mode because it requires an internet connection to open in. Safe Mode does not open with the option to connect to the internet. I will attach the screen I get in Safe Mode when trying to open InDesign. I only have one user on this computer. I can add another user if I need to but let’s try to see if I can get it to open in Safe Mode first. What can I do to get InDesign to open in Safe Mode?   ... View more

I just upgraded to InDesign 20.5.1 and it is still loading very slow. The slowness is only at the launch. It does not seem to have any issues after it is loaded. It loads the splash screen and then the big lag time is after the splash screen goes away and before the recent files screen comes up. I have noticed that if I close InDesign and open it back up, I don’t get the big delay. I still get a delay but it is not the big long delay. The only other software running on this computer is Microsoft 365, Adobe InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop, Illistrator, RootsMagic 11, an FTP program, and Microsoft Edge. I don’t have any third party addons. I was wondering if there was a cache file that I can clear in InDesign that could cure this? ... View more

Yeah, the upper corner of the text frame I was aware of but it is so tinny, it is easy to overlook.   I want to thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. I wanted to keep this as simple as possible. I wanted to keep using Word for my placed documents because I like the spell checker that Word has. In my opinion, the InDesign spell checker stinks, I hate it.   My decision. I have been playing around with InCopy since you all recommended it. I never knew anything about InCopy or that it even existed before it was mentioned here. Now that I have spent some time playing around with it, I think this is the solution that I am looking for. I like that if I try to edit a placed document in InDesign from InCopy it warns me. This is exactly what I was looking for. I will just use InCopy from here forward and slowly start converting my Word documents to InCopy. I see so many more benefits to using InCopy. I wished I had known about this before. I have set it up so that I have matching paragraph styles in Word and InDesign. That is not the issue. What I wanted to continue doing was to edit my text in word and then update it in InDesign. I really don’t want a two-way workflow that I have to pay for. I am writing a book and am over 400 pages into it and I have a lot of placed text throughout the book. I am not sure what InCopy does because I have never used it, but I will look into it and see what it does and if this could work in any way.   What I was wanting. What I was basically hoping for was to have all boxes that have placed text in them to have a highlighted box or more prominent box around it, maybe even a boarder that makes it stand out more than a regular text box. This would be very helpful for me. Then I would realize that it is a placed text and not a regular text box. The little chain link at the top of the placed text box is to easy for me to overlook. I have learned a lot just from this conversation.   I have not delved a lot into characters styles yet. Currently most of my overrides have been simple easy ones, like making a word in bold or underlining a word or sentence. It seems so much easier to me to do a Ctrl+Shift+b while I am typing on the keyboard than for me to reach over to grab the mouse and clicking on a character style set up for bold.   It takes away from my concentration of typing. I am not a good typer and I look at the keyboard a lot while I am typing. I hate having to look up at the screen and look away from the keyboard at the screen in the middle of typing a sentence and grab the mouse then and find the character style that I created for bold. I would like to be able to not have to touch the mouse that much and look away from my keyboard while I am typing. Dave Right now, I have 99% of my document set up using [Basic Paragraph].   I have 436 pages of information on it to go through and change to my new style that I created. Probably going through it one page at a time and doing it manually would be the best way because I also have some overrides on the style. This way it will get done correctly. However, before I do this, I need to address another question on something I need to tackle and see if this is possible to do in InDesign. This way I can do this at the same time changing to my new paragraph style. Dave I liked your idea and went and renamed all of my stytles. I will attach my new structure.   You also suggested never to use the default [Basic Paragraph] at all. Pretend it doesn't exist. I want to do this, so I created a new style that I am going to use for my default. I am named it ‘Body_default’ for the time being.   Now I need to somehow move the items that I have all set using the [Basic Paragraph] to my new style of ‘Body_default’. I hope I have my document/book set up right now. This is why I am asking. I want to make sure before I proceed any further.   I am only using all the styles mentioned below. All these styles are based off the [Basic Paragraph]. All I did was add a new style by duplicating the [Basic Paragraph] and renaming it. Then I did minor tweaks to each one of these styles.   Let me explain each one. Basic Paragraph with Indent, is the same as [Basic Paragraph] but I only added a first line indent of 0.1852 inch to it.   Index levels were all based off the [Basic Paragraph]. I created these for indexing in my document for the Table of Contents. All I did was change the font size and use them for indexing throughout my document. Index level 1 Index level 2 Index level 3 Index level 4   Level 1 = Content Print through Level 4 = Content Print, are also based off the [Basic Paragraph] also. I created these for how it gets put/displayed into my Table of Contents. Level 1 = Content Print Level 2 = Content Print Level 3 = Content Print Level 4 = Content Print   These are all the paragraph styles that I am using so far. I have been basing each of these off my [Basic Paragraph] when I have created them. I understand what you mean by Root now. I did not use a root structure when I created these because I figured that I did not need to. I thought if they were all the same as the [Basic Paragraph] with only a font change, I would understand what they were. That is what I titled them like I did.   I have not created the paragraph style titled ‘Ricks basic paragraph’ yet. Should I duplicate that the [Basic Paragraph] and name it ‘Ricks basic paragraph’ and use this as my default style for the document moving forward? Let me make sure I understand what you are saying correctly.   You're saying that I should always leave the [Basic Paragraph] there and not touch.
