Hi, I agree, learning and using the pen tool is really the best. But here is an idea. Make a circle (in your logo, make the larger outline shape of all that would be black) for now, Ill use a circle. Make a line with any tool, pen, pencil, arc or line tool (using the WIDTH tool might be fun to make interesting lines). color the stroke of the line yellow (color really doesn't matter, just anything that you can see), stroke width is a few points 3-5pts. Make duplicates of the yellow line and readjust the lines to make the cut outs that you're looking for. Once the lines are correct, select ONLY the yellow lines, and choose Object > Path > Outline Stroke. Now select the circle and the lines, and zoom in close. Choose the Shape Builder Tool (shift M) Hold down the Option (mac) or Alt (win) and drag the tool very carefully on the yellow lines. When you release, the yellow will be removed and the black of the circle will stay. Continue holding the option/alt key to remove all the shapes that you don't want. If you don't use the option key, shapes will be added together BTW. You'll still have to get good at drawing, and the pen tool is really the best, but this might help you draw the larger shape then removing items, instead of drawing each and every item. I've attached a screen shot where the top is the circle and the lines, and the bottom is after lines have been outlined and some have been removed by the shape builder tool. Good luck!

Here is how I would do it. On the Master page that you're using for your content ages, create a text frame and type in "return to TOC" or whatever you like. Make the button look nice. Select the text frame, and Choose View > Interactive > Hyperlinks to open the Hyperlinks panel. From the top right of the panel, choose the Panel Menu and choose New Hyperlink Link To: will be PAGE Choose the Document to link to Then choose which page number your TOC is on. Click ok Make sure this text frame, which is on the Master is on the top layer so nothing will override it. The text frame with the hyperlink will show up on all pages, which are using that master. When you click on the Hyperlink it will bring you to the table of contents page that you picked. Just make sure you don't rearrange or add/delete pages to move the TOC page, if you do, update the Hyperlink Destination Options. If you save your document with the PDF for Print preset, make sure that you click the checkboxes to activate the Bookmarks and Hyperlinks in the General PDF dialog.

Agree with SJRiegel, since you have a logo and copy on the top right of a right page and a logo at the top left of a left page, I would make each C and D Masters, which are based on A have a left and a right page - facing pages. This way, you can drag the right or left page of Master C or D down to the left or right page in your document and the logo would be on the correct side, top right or top left. to change a master to a 2 page spread: Select MP C in the pages panel, right click on the name and choose Master Options for "name of master". Then type in 2 for Number of Pages Now, recreate your content on both the left and right sides of the C or D master pages. This way, you can apply C to the right page and D to a left page as an example.

Here is a thought. We'll first make one zig zag for the widest curve. Draw a line, Effect > Distort & Transform > Zigzag . adjust to get the widest one you'll need. Object > Expand Appearance and Object > Ungroup. Now you have an editable line. Delete the rest of the line, so you have just one curve. make a copy and move to the other side of the page, and make the one on the left a skinny curve, by dragging in the bounding box. Select both wide and skinny curves. Choose the blend Tool in the Tools Panel. Click on the bottom point on both curves. type in how many curves you'll need. If you type in 10, you'll end up with 12, 10 in the middle and two on each side. Click ok to make the blend. You'll end up with this: Object > Expand to break apart the blend. Object > Ungroup to get separate curves Now, select all these expanded curves, click on one of the curves again to make it the KEY object (it will turn a thicker selection color) (You need to do this to type in a value in the next step) Open the Align Panel and in the very bottom under Distribute Spacing: type in "0" for the value and click the second button - to align the edges of each curve with the edge of the next curve with "0" space between. This will align all the curves so they butt up to each other depending on their width. Now, you'll need to join the connecting points. Select all the curves with the direct selection tool and choose Object > Path > Join I hope this works for you! Laurie

I agree with Bob. Since you are never positive how, where, what computer, tablet, phone etc. or what program people will view your PDF on, you will get mixed results on most of the interactive features from InDesign to PDF. Animation and Multiple State Objects don't work in an interactive PDF. If it has to be a PDF then you don't have many options. You can explore Publish Online, Fixed Layout ePub export, but they each have issues. Check out www.ajarproductions.com the product in5 will create HTML5 content from InDesign. It's an .html file, not a PDF. All buttons, animations, MSOs, hyperlinks and more can be created in and exported.

Hi, I like the answer to hide the Shape Widgets, but in one of your responses you asked if you could draw a triangle in three moves. Instead of using the line tool to make a triangle with three separate lines, use the Pen tool. 1. Hit the "p" key on your keyboard and click three times, at each point of the triangle. 2. Then, hover over the first point you drew, wait for the little circle to show up next to the pen tool and click to close up the shape. 3. Now you have a true triangle, and can use the Direct Selection tool to move the corner points to reshape it. You can also choose to Fill or Stroke the triangle with a color. If you drew the triangle with three separate lines, then you couldn't easily move the location of the corner points, (you would have to move each point on both lines) nor would you be able to fill it.

Hi Jessica, I use "Gridify" to place multiple photos, and make the frames exactly the same size. 1. File > Place 2. select all 100 photos and click OK 3. click and drag on your page, and DON'T release the mouse... hit the up arrow key on your keyboard 9 times, then the right arrow key 9 times. That will give you a 10 x 10 gird of photos. Resize as needed, then release the mouse. 4. Keep photots all selected and choose the two CENTER align buttons in the Align panel or at the top. Now all 100 photos are sitting on top of each other. 5. Keep them selected (or marquee around them if they are not) and hold the Command / Shift (mac) or CTRL/shift (win) and pull one cornrs to resize them to desired size. Both frames and photos will resize. 6. You may have to choose Object > Fitting > Fill Content Proportionally. Now, proceed with above suggestions about creating a MSO (select photos, go to the Window > Interactive > Object States panel and click on the new button at the bottom right. ) Make a button to control the forward and backward advance and set the button to Go To Next State.

Hi, I agree with AM - that this calls for Master Pages. But, that said, here is another possible work around that may get your some results, and it free. Select the Title and set it to SPAN (choose the little "magic menu" to the very right of the control Panel and choose SPAN columns.) Then set that paragraph to span all columns. This way it will center on top of the two columns of the body text. Make a paragraph Style so it can easily be applied to each title. (this way you don't have to make a separate text frame for the title, it will be able to travel with your story. Another setting that I would apply to that Title paragraph style is KEEP OPTIONS (found in the same menu to the very right in the control panel.) In Keep Options, you can set the Title paragraph style to always start at the top of the next frame, column, odd or even page. Now, if you add text to the previous page, the title has been told that no text can exist above it on a page - so it will automatically jump to the next frame, on the next page. Not sure it is the most elegant answer, but I've been in a pinch like this and anything might just work! Good luck.

Choose Window > Workspace > Essentials Classic to return to the "familiar" workspace. or Add the Control panel back in - Window > Control In the Properties Panel, you can click the Options button under the Text Frame section to open the Text Frame Options dialog - Same as Cmd + B CTRL + B or Object > Text Frame Options. Just make sure to have the text frame selected with the Selection Tool. If you have the text selected with a cursor, you'll see Options, but it will be for Bullets & Numbering

Another thing to know, the color picked up from your photo will go to your Fill or Stroke, which ever is active. Hit the "x" key on the keyboard to switch which one is active, Fill or Stroke. Also make sure the image isn't Locked (Object > Unlock All on Spread). Check your Layers Panel to make sure nothing is locked either. When you have the Eyedropper tool active, and a locked layer selected it won't pick up the color.

Hi, Srishti is correct, I would like to add a little bit of information. View > Screen Mode > Normal vs. Preview is one way to turn on and off the frame edges and other non printing items. You can also go to the top of the screen, above the control panel (screen shot) and click on the button called Screen Mode and choose the same options, Normal (showing lines) Preview (not showing any non printing lines). Presentation Mode is great too, it removes all non printing items and hides the panels and tools as well. Hit ESCAPE key to get out of the Preview mode. As mentioned, when you have the Selection Tool active, you can hit the "w" key (no other keys, just the w) and that will alternate between Preview mode and Normal mode. (be careful to not hit the "w" key when you have a cursor blinking in your text.) The button just to the left of Screen Mode, is a button called View Options. Here you can turn on and off the Frame Edges (blue lines around the frames), Rulers, Guides or Hidden Characters (this will turn on and off the paragraph markers, spaces, tabs and all other non printing text characters). Good luck in your learning!

A drop cap is a paragraph attribute. You apply the settings to a specific number of characters, at the beginning of the paragraph, and it will go down, into the paragraph a specific number of lines. The number of characters will be set according to the paragraph settings. If you want just the word like in your screen shot "initial" to be a different color, font and size, and NOT dropped into the paragraph, that can be done by setting up a Nested Paragraph Style. First make a style for your body text called Body with Red first words. Then make a CHARACTER style to make the word Red, bigger - call it Red Word Then open up your Paragraph Style (body with red first words) and on the list on the left, choose Drop Cap and Nested Style. You have to define a Nested Style here, NOT a Drop Cap. Click New Nested Style Button. Choose your Character style Red Word from the list Choose "through" Choose how many Words (1 or 2 or 3) Choose what you want the Red Word character style to stop at, if you picked 2 above and Words from the fourth position, this will always apply the red character style to the first 2 words, when this paragraph style is used. Confusing I know. get more info by looking up a video on using Nested Styles If you know that you ALWAYS want 1 or 2 characters dropped down 3 lines into your paragraph you can set it up in the top part of the dialog shown here, but the problem is when you want one paragarph to have 2 words, then another to have 4 words and the number of characters is different for each instance.

Something (bold) might be overriding the default style. Open up your document, and choose the Selection tool. Now, click on the pasteboard, or nothing. You want no frame, no text or anything selected. Look in your Character Styles Panel. (Window>Styles>Character Styles) Make sure that [None] is active. If you have Bold or some other Character style chosen, when you have nothing selected on your page, then everything is getting that bold style as a default without you knowing it. Then, do the same check for the Paragraph Styles panel. Make sure it's using Basic Paragraph (or a specific style of your choice,) but make sure there isn't a "+" sitting next to your [basic Paragraph] If there is, then Bold (or something) was overriding your style and it's sometimes hard to get rid of it. Hold Option or Alt, then click on the word [Basic Paragraph} in the Paragraph Styles panel. This will clear out any overrides. Now, make a new text frame and type in a caption, and apply your style. hopefully that's it 🙂

Yes, the blue box edges will show up around all frames, both text and graphic frames. You can turn them on and off by clicking on the first of the three little buttons at the top of your screen, (see screen shot) The button is called "View Options" (roll over to see the tool tip) If you remove the checkmark for Frame Edges, that will remove the blue box, which is just a visual to help you see how big and where the frames are located. They won't print. The purple and pink lines are turned on and off by choosing Guides. Hit the "W" key (make sure you are NOT in text with a blinking cursor) to turn them all on and off. Good luck!

One more thing Andross, I answered this question as if you were using Illustrator, but I now notice that you are indeed using InDesign. This sort of a logo should be created in Illustrator because you have many more export options when saving for other devices, and you have more flexibility with the Illustrator tools. If you re-do it in Illustrator, then you can save it as an .AI file format. Each time you need to use it in InDesign document, you simply File > Place the .AI file. then if you need to make a change to the logo, all instances of the logo would be updated in every InDesign document as you open them up, the Links panel would make sure it has the correct and most up to date .AI file. I'm glad you got it to work in InDesign, in the future, try Illustrator!

If you want just a quick solution, the star solutions that have been mentioned above are very simple and quick. If you want to make it with one petal going around a circle, then to make the one petal, I would probably just start out by making an oval - tall and thin. You could also make a rounded corner rectangle. Any shape will work This is the guides, and the oval with a orange fill this is after the one oval has been rotated around the center point. It will look different depending on how thick, tall or wide your oval is and how many you choose.

I see that you have a little red plus next to the E in Barrie. That's not allowing all the text to show, and the justify not going to the full circle. using your selection tool, click and drag the LINE (click above or below the red plus, don't click the red plus) so that the line is right next to the other line next to the E in Edmonton. (see my screenshot, my two lines are right next to each other. The two lines I'm referring to are your left and right alignment edges. If you choose to align left, they will go to the Edmonton line and if you choose align right, it will go to the Barrie line. So try this. I typed a word, two spaces, then a bullet, then two spaces then the next word, continue around the circle. Select words with type tool and choose from the PARAGRAPH panel, the right most Align button "Justify all lines" (screen shot) The last word and spacing might give you a problem, not honoring the spacing, and making it the same between the last and first words as it is between the first and second. To fix, I added a "." period character after the last spaces, then made it really small and colored it with none. you can't have 2 spaces at the end so you have to put some character in there. The Full Justify all lines now adds the flexible spacing to actual spaces. Also in my screen shot, notice the two lines are right next to each other. (very important to grab the lines to move them, NOT the little boxes. See the little period to the left of the ONE at the top left. I haven't made it small or colored it with none yet. As long as you're consistent on the spaces they should evenly space out, if you need to adjust a bit, add a bit of kerning (Alt / Option right or left arrows) cheers!

Couple of things to try... There is a possibility that you pasted the coped box into text, with a cursor blinking. By doing so, you made the copied box an inline or anchored graphic. Make sure all of your Type > Show Hidden Characters are on and your Frame Edges (View menu)- so you can see non printing characters. Choose View > Extras > Show Text Threads to see if there is a line connecting the pasted box into any text. If so, select around where the line points to. That would tell you if it's anchored. Get your Type tool and drag across the box with the type tool to see if that can select it as a character. Maybe it's locked? Choose Object > Unlock all on Spread Check in your Layers Panel that there are no Locks on in the second to left column. You might have to open up all the layers to see inside.

File > Place your sketch into IL. choose your sketch and click on the page. Note-Scan your sketch and save as a JPG or PSD format - doesn't really matter. You can also copy and paste. You just need the scan on the page in IL Select the sketch, choose the IMAGE TRACE button at the top of the IL window. This will turn the sketch into a vector (shapes) drawing. Now, choose Window > Image Trace and change the MODE to something that looks good, depending on the sketch this could be anything. Click the EXPAND button at the top (make sure it's still selected) Hit K key on the keyboard, this will select the Live Paint Bucket Tool in the Tools Panel (I would double click on the actual Live Paint Bucket tool, in the tools panel, and check mark the setting that says "CURSOR SWATCH PREVIEW") Choose a color in your swatches panel. You'll see three little squares above the tool, (if you turned on cursor swatch preview) representing the colors in the swatches panel. Click on an area in your sketch. The entire area will fill with chosen color. Hit the arrow keys on your keyboard to move to another color in the swatches panel. click again, on another shape with a new color. Continue coloring your sketch. Once you're finished coloring, You can choose Object > Expand... to take it from "live paint mode" to actual objects so you can modify each object. Hope this helps!

It looks like you have a pattern that is filling a rectangle. Try double clicking on the Selection Tool (the actual tool in the tool box) There is a check box that is ON for Transform Patterns. Un check it, and you can now resize the shape without stretching the pattern. This works for all transformation tools, rotate, skew, scale etc. Just double click on the tool to get the options.

There are a couple of ways. One is to make one shape, we'll call it a petal, and duplicate it around a circle. 1. Make horizontal and vertical guidelines, so they cross in the middle of the page. This is so you have a mid point. 2. Make one petal, the one at the top (12 o'clock position) Keep it selected with the Selection tool. make sure its lined up on the vertical guide and above the horizontal guide. 3. Click once on the Rotate Tool in the tools. (or hit R on your keyboard) 4. Hold Option or Alt, then click on the mid point where the guidelines meet. (petal is still selected) 5. This brings up a dialog box. Type in 360/36 (the 36 is the number of petals that you want, I didn't count yours) This formula is saying that there are 360 degrees in a circle, and you divide 360 by the number of petals that you want. Your answer is the number of degrees the one petal is rotating to make the second petal. 5. Hit OK, then choose Object>Transform>Transform Again. This will make another petal. keep choosing Transform Again, or hit Command D or CTRL D to keep making petals around the circle, until you get back to the beginning. This will make an absolutely perfect shape. I think yours looks a little hand drawn, so you can them adjust each petal individually. Another way would be to 1. Draw a circle 2. Object>Path>Add anchor points (you'll have to play with the number to get what you want.) if you have 4 points on a circle, the default, then you'll have 4 petals. 3. Choose Effect>Distort & Transform> Pucker and Bloat. 4. Turn on Preview and move the slider towards Bloat to get what you are looking for. 5. Again, this is perfect, so you might have to choose Object >Expand Appearance to remove and apply the Effect so you can modify all the points with the direct selection tool. I hope one of these helps.
