[Now released] Performance improvements for AVC Intra media

This feature is now shipping in the October release of Premiere Pro. Questions or comment about it should be posted to the main Premiere Pro forum: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/ct-p/ct-premiere-pro

-----------------

In the v23 beta of Premiere Pro, there’s a performance improvement we’d love to get your feedback on. For Apple silicon users, we’ve added hardware acceleration of media in AVC Intra in MXF format. That sounds very specific but it’s actually fairly common. On Sony cameras, like the FX6 and FX9, it’s XAVC-I .mxf files. On Canon, with cameras like the C70 and C300, it’s XF-AVC Intra .mxf files.

AVC Intra already performs well on most recent computers. However, with hardware acceleration on Apple silicon, you should see:

  • Lower CPU utilization during playback
  • Faster output times
  • Smoother playback with multiple video tracks

If you’re using an Apple silicon Mac with this type of media, we’d love to get your feedback.

Thanks!

Plus 1, to XAVC-I or XAVC-CF or whatever the cannon one is called being decoded on the GPU or getting hardware acceleration on Windows.

I don't really have an issue with speed or scrubbing performance on my PC with the -I formats at the moment, but I think it would help with any sort of Long GOP flavor of those codecs or multi-cam, and any sort of speed up to export is always important.

Ok after using Sony Catalyst Browse to review 4K A7s3 clips and then trying to scrub the same exact file in Premiere Pro on Windows, the difference is night and day. If you could get an a7s3 files to scrub or playback as well as as Sony Catalyst Browse does I would never have to make a proxy again.  My guess is they are making better use of hardware decoding for 10 bit H.264/5 etc.

Hi Fergus,

Thank you for the update.

From your perspective, what is the likelihood of seeing AVC-i MXF acceleration in Adobe Premiere on Windows machines? We are really missing it in our workflows (with some high-profile productions involved).

Happy to discuss and share more details in PM, if this helps.

Best regards,

Anton

Hi Anton,

It depends on a variety of factors, including codec, bit-depth, and chroma subsampling. I'd suggest you drop me a DM with more details of the formats you're using.

Regards,

Fergus
