24.3 After Effects error: Photoshop file format error (-1). (45::35)

I render out Cinema DNG files using After Effects all the time. 24.3 Mac (intel) has something seriously broken with it when it comes to accessing DNG sequences over an SMB network connection. Prior versions worked fine with no issue. Windows version not impacted.

Everytime I open an existing project, it first asks to convert it to the new format and then it gives me a dozen or more errors:

After Effects error: Photoshop file format error (-1). (45::35)

Some details:

  • AE for Mac (Intel) version 24.3.0 (build 50)

  • Footage where this is occurring is Cinema DNG format.

  • Files are stored on a TrueNAS server connected by SMB over 10Gbe Ethernet.

  • Prior to this I have seen PS have issues occasionally opening DNGs on network drives but never AE.

  • Oddly, when previewing C-DNG sequences, it shows most frames just fine.

  • All DNGs are confirmed to be valid and not corrupted or special in any way.

  • Prior versions of AE did NOT have this issue.

  • Does not occur on Windows version of After Effects.

Hi all,

Just following up, this issue was fixed back in After Effects 24.5, along with the issues listed here: https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/kb/fixed-issues.html.

Thank you again for reporting,

Thanks for confirming the fix. We have backported the fix into 24.5 which we are preparing to release soonish. So yes, you'll be able to go back to the non-beta build once that's out.

"The fix is now available in 24.6 beta builds (build 4 or above). If you are able to install a beta build and check that our fix works for you, that'd be really helpful. Thanks."

I can confirm this fix worked. In the release version of AE I'd open the project, get this error, and everything would show up black. Hoping this gets added to the normal release soon so I can go back to the release builds. Thanks!

We've identified the cause of the issue and have a fix in internal testing. Hoping to have the fix into beta this week for further confirmation. Unfortunately there isn't a workaround as the issue is related to an update to the XCode compiler AE integrated in 24.3. Will post back here when the fix is in Beta.

Just following up on this. Was working in AE 24.3 while getting this error.

I just rolled back to 24.1, and suddenly all the same files that were receiving GPU errors before are all working with no errors. Hopefully Adobe will figure out this bug soon, but for now rolling back seems to help.

Still don't know what was causing it, but at least for now I can work in the previous version until adobe figures out this bug.

I'm also having this error, but not using Maya at all.

just Photoshop files in After Effects.

I was working on the same projects a couple days ago with no issues. Now multiple files are having the same error.

Also tried it on two different machines, and it happens on both.

Wondering if it is just the latest AE update.

I'm gonna try rolling back a version to see what happens. At this point I just have a bunch of files that are totally uneditable.

It's frustrating!

Hi @iawood,

Thank you for reporting this issue. We are also able to reproduce the Photoshop file format error when opening and converting a 23.6 project into a 24.3 project. We have a ticket open to investigate a fix for a future version of After Effects.

Thanks again,

ACR is version 16.2.1 on both windows and mac. Both are fully opdated.

I have now encountered issues on Windows as well. I don't get the error above but my rendering just stops after about 400 or so frames.

All of this used to work perfectly on both machines.
