After Effects crashes all the time when choosing Cinema 4D renderer for extruding and animating shapes, I have tried reinstalling, clearing preferences and importing the .AEP in a new project or restarting from scratch without success.

After Effects 22.4
MacBook Pro M1 Max 64 GB Memory
Monterey 12.4

Thanks in advance!

Hi John,

unfortunate the problem doesn't seem so be fixed.
I'm using Version 23.0 on an M1 32GB (Monterey 12.5.1) and the crashes still occure every few minutes when using 3D extruded layers.

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

This issue has been fixed in After Effects 2023 (version 23.0) which is now available in the Creative Cloud app. You should no longer experience a crash when using the C4D renderer inside After Effects on M1 Macs.

Thanks again for reporting this issue,

I have the same setup: M1 Max 64 GB Memory, Monterey 12.6 and it happens to me too. Constantly crashing when using the C4D renderer. It's awful! And I needed that extrude option because I have 3D shapes that needed bevelled edges.

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply, I also have After Effects (Apple Silicon) crashing when working with Cinema 4D Lite files linked in composition. Crashes are less frequent than extruding shapes directly inside the application, but maybe it can give you additional information about the current stability issues between After Effects and Cinema 4D.

Thanks!

I upgraded to 22.5.0. This did NOT fix the problem.

This is happening to me too. Constantly. It does not crash in projects using the Classic renderer. It has crashed over 50 times. It seems to occur during caching of frames. Whenever idle frame caching happens (Preferences>Preview>Cache Idle Frames), it crashes. Sometimes it does it with RAM Preview. But it does it without fail.

I am not using plugins. It does not happen in Classic 3D comps. It does allow me to save before the program crashes. I've sent a crash report nearly every time (someone is probably tired of reading them).

I'm on a macbook pro m1 max with 64GB RAM. I've tried cleaning the cache and cache database. I've tried switching them to a separate SSD from my system. I've tried raising the amount of Texture Memory allowed. I've tried raising the amount of disk space used for Cache Files to 150GB. I'm running out of things to try.

I'm working in a 4K comp at 24fps in a 16-bit project.

I'd also be happy to share the project file.

Hi Omar,

Thanks very much for that additional information! I was able to reproduce the same crash on an M1 MacBook Pro and have opened a ticket for our team and Maxon to investigate further.

I'm glad to hear that using Rosetta avoids the crash. That may be helpful for our investigation into this issue. We will update this ticket as we learn or if a fix becomes available.

Thanks again,
